05.16.2019 | Baseball
SHELBY, N.C. – A strong start and extremely effective pitching helped lead UNC Asheville to a 3-2 Big South win over Gardner-Webb on Thursday, May 16, at Keeter Stadium.
Greg Gasparro got things started for UNC Asheville in the game when he led things off with a single to left field. Dominic Freeberger then singled to give Asheville two on base with no outs. A couple of batters later, Brandon Lankford singled through the left side to score Gasparro, who had made his way over to third just before on a balk.
UNC Asheville (16-33, 9-16 Big South) added to its lead in the top of the third inning when Lankford belted his team-leading 14th home run of the season.
Gardner-Webb (23-24, 12-13 Big South) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to make it 2-1, but Asheville responded with another run in the top of the fourth inning. Freeberger commenced the efforts for Asheville in the frame with a single. He was then moved into scoring position on a Jake Madole single. Two batters later, Danny Wilson singled in Freeberger to give UNC Asheville a 3-1 lead.
Gardner-Webb was able to get one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning, but UNC Asheville's Kole Harris struck out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for Asheville.
Harris' strong efforts in the ninth allowed him to collect his 16th career save, which is a new UNC Asheville program record in the category. His eighth save of 2019 also tied him with Seth Denton (2003) and Justin Schumer (2008) for the most single-season saves in program history as well.
UNC Asheville's Austin Fahr (2-0) picked up the win the game on the mound. In his first start of the year, Fahr was fantastic. He fanned six, allowed just one run and three hits.
Blake Brown pitched a strong two innings for UNC Asheville on the hill before giving way to Fahr in the ninth. Brown struck out five.
Gardner-Webb starter Landon Mitchell (7-5) suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched the first 3.2 innings and gave up all three Asheville runs.
