Women’s Tennis Upsets Second-Seeded Presbyterian to Advance to Semifinals of Big South Championships

RADFORD, Va. – The seventh seeded UNC Asheville women's tennis team defeated second seeded Presbyterian by a score of 4-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Championships on Wednesday afternoon.
The match began with the Bulldogs winning the doubles point. The senior duo of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley won 6-2 at No. 3, while Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele won 6-4 at No. 2 to secure the first point of the match for the Bulldogs.
The Blue Hose responded by winning the first two singles matches at No. 2 and No. 4 to give Presbyterian the lead.
The Bulldogs would hold Presbyterian there as UNC Asheville would go on to win three straight singles matches to claim the victory.
Lauren-Watson Steele defeated Jessica Leeman 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 to tie the match up 2-2. Big South Freshman of the Year Lize Alet Morkel put UNC Asheville ahead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1.
Emily Sidor, playing at No. 3, picked up her tenth win of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Samantha Calais to send UNC Asheville to the semifinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Championships.
Next UNC Asheville will face sixth-seeded Radford in a match that will take place at 3 p.m. on April 17. The semifinal matchup between UNC Asheville and Radford will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at Radford University.
