Women’s Tennis Falls to Radford in Semifinals of Big South Championships

RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville women's tennis team fell to Radford 4-1 in the semifinal round of the Big South Championships on Thursday afternoon. 

The Bulldogs gained a slight advantage by winning the first doubles match at No. 3. The senior duo of Kylee Shipley and Hannah Francisco remained unbeaten in the 2019 Big South Championships with a 6-1 win at No. 3.

The Highlanders would respond back with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to claim the doubles point.

Radford would take a 2-0 lead by grabbing the first singles match with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 6

Freshman of the Year Lize Alet Morkel defeated Anastasia Belyaeva 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 for the second time this season. Morkel defeated Belyaeva 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 on Feb. 16 at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. Morkel now ends her freshman season with 15 wins in singles, playing all of them at No. 1.

Radford would rally to take the matches at No. 2 and No. 4 to secure the victory and hand UNC Asheville the 4-1 loss.

The Bulldogs finish the 2019 spring season with a 10-9 record overall. UNC Asheville women's tennis was an impressive 8-2 when playing on their home courts at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown
