ASHEVILLE N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team is set to host Western Carolina in a midweek Mountain Rivalry matchup on March 6 at Greenwood Field.

First pitch is now scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville owns a 4-6 overall record and enters Wednesday on a three-game win streak. The Bulldogs defeated Furman on the road last week before they swept Iona in a doubleheader on March 2 at Greenwood Field.

In the last four games, the Bulldogs have four players hitting over .300 with at least 10 at-bats. They are led by Greg Gasparro at .615, followed by Carmine Pagano at .357, Dominic Freeberger at .333 and Danny Wilson at .333.

As a team, the Bulldogs have tallied 22 runs on 35 hits in the last four games.   

On the hill in the last four games, the Bulldogs were led by redshirt junior Jordan Carr. Carr started one game, went 5.1 innings and surrendered one earned run on three hits to secure the win. Blake Brown followed Carr's performance with his own start, as he went 5.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits to get the win over the Gaels.   

In the last four games, it has been the bullpen that has really thrived for the Bulldogs. Jacob Edwards has been a force with 6.1 innings pitched, no runs allowed and six strikeouts. Ethan Tressler has thrown 2.2 innings with no runs allowed, no hits and two strikeouts, while Kole Harris has contributed two innings, no runs allowed and three strikeouts.

About Western Carolina

Western Carolina is 5-5 overall on the season and is 0-1 in road games. The Catamounts are currently on a three-game losing streak.

Offensively, the Catamounts are led by sophomore Justice Bigbie. Bigbie leads the team with 15 hits, 12 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Daylan Nanny leads Western Carolina with 28 total bases and five doubles. He also has 10 runs scored, 14 hits, three home runs and 10 RBIs.

On the mound, the Catamounts are led by Zach Franklin with 14 innings pitched and a 2.57 ERA. Taylor Purus has started three games with 17.2 innings pitched, 15 strikeouts and only four walks. Ty McColloch has thrown 9.2 innings out of the bullpen with a 1.86 ERA.

Big South Weekly Honors

UNC Asheville baseball utility players Greg Gasparro and Jacob Edwards earned weekly Big South Conference honors on Monday, March 4, 2019.

Gasparro was tabbed the Big South Player of the Week, and Edwards collected Freshman of the Week honors for their performances last week.

Gasparro started in all four games last week for Asheville - three starts in the outfield and one start on the mound. In his three starts in the lineup, the junior collected eight total hits in just 13 at-bats (.615 batting average). The Pennington, N.J. native also slugged .769 and tallied a .643 on-base percentage. Of his eight total hits, Gasparro collected two doubles. He also touched home four times and had 10 total bases in the four-game week.

Gasparro also made a start on the mound at Furman, and he worked two innings. The left-hander allowed just one run, struck out four and scattered two hits.

Edwards pitched in two games and appeared in the lineup in three games.

The rookie totaled 6.1 innings of work, as he totaled his second career win and first career save. On the bump, Edwards didn't surrender a run and struck out six batters, while holding opponents to a .227 batting average.

Offensively, Edwards appeared in three games in the lineup, including two starts in the outfield. He touched home twice in just four at-bats. He also drew two walks.
