JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After playing six straight Big South Conference games, the UNC Asheville baseball team will step out of league play to square off with East Tennessee State University on Wednesday at Thomas Stadium.

About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville travels to ETSU with an 8-14 overall record, and in the last five games, the Bulldogs are 3-2 with victories over USC Upstate and Campbell.

In the three-game road series at Campbell, the pitching shined in the 3-0 victory over the Camels on Friday. Jordan Carr got the start for the Bulldogs, and he worked 5.1 innings without allowing a run. Eric Whitecavage was the first reliever, and the sidearm pitcher worked 2.2 frames and also didn't allow a run. Kole Harris closed the game for the combined shutout, as he earned his fourth save of the year. Jake Madole and Greg Gasparro provided the offense in three-run win, as they combined for all three RBIs.

In the other two games, UNC Asheville connected with three home runs. Headlining the homers was PJ Heintz and Dominic Freeberger, as both rookies earned their first collegiate home run. Madole was the final Bulldog with a home run, as he blasted a two-run homer in Sunday's contest.

Overall in the three-game road series, six pitchers provided scoreless outings on the hill – Carr, Harris, David Dobson, Austin Fahr, Trey Jernigan and Jacob Edwards. The six Bulldogs combined for 10 innings of work, seven hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

About ETSU

East Tennessee State University welcomes UNC Asheville to Johnson City with an impressive 17-5 overall record, which includes a 15-1 record in home games this year. The Buccaneers only loss at home this season was to No. 22 Tennessee. ETSU will play the nationally-ranked Vols again on Tuesday before squaring off with the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

The Bucs are hitting at a .289 clip, which is headlined by four players hitting .325 or higher this season. Infielder Cullen Smith is the team's top hitter, who has a .350 batting average. He has started all 22 games and has 28 hits, which includes eight doubles and four home runs. Cade Gilbert is right behind his teammate, as he has appeared in 22 games with a .345 batting average. He has a team-leading 30 total hits. Colby Emmertz has started in 16 contests this season and has a .345 batting average as well. He has five extra-base hits and sports a .500 slugging percentage. Catcher Jackson Greer rounds out the potent offense, as he has a .325 batting average. He has 12 extra-base hits, and of those hits, seven are doubles and four are home runs.

Just as equally impressive, ETSU's pitching staff totes a 3.70 team ERA and has six saves this year in 194.2 innings of work. As a team, the Bucs have struck out 197 opponents and have walked just 70. ETSU's weekend rotation has been strong, as all three pitchers have a sub-2.50 ERA this season with six starts each. Out of the bullpen, three Buccaneers have seen action in eight or more games in Matthew Mercer (10 games), Trey Oglesby (eight games) and Zachary Kirby (eight games). Mercer totes a 2.25 ERA and has struck out 21 batters in 16 innings of work.
