Women’s Basketball Celebrates Senior Day in Dominating Fashion; Clinches Bye in Big South Tournament

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Five seniors played in their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, as the UNC Asheville women's basketball team dominated Charleston Southern, 62-45, inside Kimmel Arena to earn a bye in the Big South Conference Tournament.

With the 17-point victory over the Buccaneers, UNC Asheville has been guaranteed a spot in the Quarterfinal round. Radford and High Point will play host to the new format of the Big South Conference Tournament.

Between the four senior Bulldogs, they have extended their UNC Asheville D1 winningest class record to 77 games.

Game Highlights

Unlike when the Bulldogs traveled to Charleston on Feb. 5, the Bulldogs opened the game in dominating fashion, as they outscored the Buccaneers, 17-4. Five Bulldogs scored in the stanza, as Jessica Wall and Sonora Dengokl combined for nine points and four field goals.

CSU trimmed the deficit in the second quarter, as it posted a six-point advantage in the stanza. Five Bulldogs still scored in the quarter, as Ali Trani and Wall each posted a made three-pointer.

At the halftime break, four Bulldogs had five or more points to lead Asheville to a 29-22 lead at the intermission. Wall had a game-high eight points on three made field goals. Dengokl and Trani each posted six points, while Nadiria Evans posted five points. Brooke Jordan-Brown grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs came out firing in the third quarter, as they extended their lead by five points to take a 45-33 lead into the final quarter. Evans led the offensive surge for the Bulldogs, as the sophomore guard went 2-for-3 from both the field and free throw line.

Asheville continued its hot stretch by finishing the game outscoring CSU, 17-12, and claiming the 62-45 victory on Senior Day. Evans again added five points, while Zip Scott and Jordan-Brown contributed three points each.

Three Bulldogs posted double-digit performances. Evans had a game-high 16 points on six made field goals. She also converted on four free throws and tallied three assists.

Dengokl shot 50 percent from the hardwood, as she finished with 12 points in just her second game back from returning from injury. She also earned three rebounds and a pair of assists.

Senior guard Wall finished with 11 points, as she finished with four made field goals. Three of those field goals came behind the three-point arc.

Jordan-Brown, who played 20 minutes off the bench, had a highlight day on the glass, as she corralled 15 rebounds. Ten of those were defensive rebounds, while five were on the offensive glass. She also added five points and a pair of blocks in the home finale.

Redshirt senior Tiffany Wilson added four boards, while Juliet Esadah posted four rebounds as well.

UNC Asheville advances to 16-12 overall and 11-6 in Big South Conference action. Asheville has secured its fourth straight winning season, as it is now four games over .500. The Bulldogs are also one Big South win away from earning their third 12-plus win season in the league in program history.

Charleston Southern falls to 10-17 overall and 7-9 in league games.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville will conclude the regular season with a road game at High Point. The regular season finale is set for Wednesday, March 6 and will start at 7 p.m.
