Bulldogs Drop Regular Season Finale; Open Big South Tournament Tuesday at Presbyterian College

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – High Point was narrowly able to hold off UNC Asheville men's basketball in a 79-74 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday, March 2, at Kimmel Arena.

High Point (16-14, 9-7 Big South) opened the game on a 9-2 run, but UNC Asheville (4-26, 2-14 Big South) responded by going on a 15-7 run to take its first lead of the game at 17-16 after a Tajion Jones three-pointer with 8:15 remaining in the first half.

The two teams would keep trading buckets over the next few minutes with the game tied at 24-all with 4:29 to play in the first half after a Donovan Gilmore fast break layup off an assist by DeVon Baker.

The Bulldogs would lead by as many as three down the stretch in the first half before taking a one-point lead into intermission at 29-28.

UNC Asheville closed out the first half shooting 37 percent (10-of-27), while High Point shot 44 percent (11-of-25) in the first half.

The Bulldogs would hold a three-point lead at 57-53 after another Jones trey with 7:27 to play in the contest. UNC Asheville from there would lead by as many as six over the next couple of minutes before the game was tied up at 61-61 with 5:22 to play.

High Point would take the lead shortly thereafter and despite strong resolve in the final minutes of the game by the Bulldogs the Panthers were able to collect the five-point win.

Three Bulldogs ended their efforts in double figures with Jones leading the way with 20 points on an impressive 7-of-9 shooting overall. He knocked down six three-pointers and he was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. Jones also had two assists, one rebound and one steal.

Coty Jude finished with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He hit all of his shots from beyond the arc in the game. He also had five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 33 minutes on the floor.

The final Bulldog in double figures was Baker, who had 13 points, a career-best eight assists, six rebounds and two steals.

Three players for High Point also finished in double figures with High Point's Jahaad Proctor leading all scorers with 20 points.

High Point shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) as a team, while UNC Asheville shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54).

Big South Tournament Play Begins Tuesday

The Bulldogs are the 10th seeded in the upcoming 2019 Big South Tournament. As the 10 seed, UNC Asheville will travel to Clinton, S.C. to battle the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, in the first round of the tournament. Among the Best in Big South History
UNC Asheville men's basketball freshman DeVon Baker after his 13 points in the home game with High Point now has 491 points on the season. The point total is eighth-best in Big South history among freshmen. With nine more points he would also become just the eighth freshman in league history with 500 or more points. Baker ended the regular season having scored in double figures 26 times this season for the Bulldogs overall. He has scored in double figures in 21 out of UNC Asheville's last 22 games.

Don's Day
The Bulldogs honored lone senior Donovan Gilmore before Saturday's regular season finale against High Point. The Bulldogs also honored manager Ryan Oliva.

Sharing the Basketball
UNC Asheville men's basketball had a season-best 19 assists on 25 field goals in the home game with High Point. The Bulldogs now have three games this season with 18 or more assists as a team in a game.
