Bulldogs Close Out 2018-19 Season With Big South Tournament Loss at Presbyterian College

CLINTON, S.C. – The 2018-19 UNC Asheville men's basketball season came to a close in a 106-59 Big South Tournament first round loss to Presbyterian College at the Templeton Center.

The Blue Hose (18-14, 9-7 Big South) would hold a slight 6-4 lead early in the game, but an 8-2 run over the next couple of minutes allowed Presbyterian College to take a 14-6 advantage with just under 16 minutes to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs (4-27, 2-14 Big South) would cut the lead to 14-10 shortly thereafter, but another run by the Blue Hose allowed Presbyterian College to take its lead to double digits for the first time at 20-10 with a little over 12 minutes left in the first stanza. The Blue Hose would lead 33-13 with 9:09 remaining in the opening half of action.

Presbyterian College would take a 58-30 lead into the halftime break.

UNC Asheville shot 45.8 percent (11-of-24) in the first half, while the Blue Hose ended the first half shooting 55.9 percent (19-of-34).

Tajion Jones led the Bulldogs in the first half with eight points. Eight different Bulldogs scored in the first half.

The second half would commence with the Bulldogs going on a 7-4 run, but the Blue Hose would follow up with a 20-0 run that garnered them an 82-37 lead with 11:54 remaining in the contest.

Presbyterian College would close things out from there.

The Blue Hose finished the game shooting 56.1 percent (37-of-66) from the field as a team. Presbyterian College knocked down 21 three-pointers in the contest.

UNC Asheville shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) as a team in its loss. The Bulldogs were strong from the free throw line where they were 14-of-19 (73.7 percent).

Jones was the only Bulldog in double figures in the game with 15 points. Thorpe was 6-of-13 from the field in the contest.

JC Younger led five Blue Hose in double figures with 24 points. He knocked down eight three-pointers in the game.

Thank You, Donovan Gilmore

Gilmore played his final game in a Bulldog uniform in the Big South Tournament game at Presbyterian College.

Gilmore played in 59 games overall in a UNC Asheville uniform. The forward scored 201 points and brought down 181 rebounds in his career. Gilmore had two double-doubles in his career.

In UNC Asheville's win over Milligan last season he had 16 rebounds and 13 points. This season in UNC Asheville's home Big South win over USC Upstate, Gilmore finished with a career-best 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Wesleyan Christian Academy product will graduate from UNC Asheville in May of 2019 with a degree in Health & Wellness Promotion.

Honored Before the Game
UNC Asheville's DeVon Baker and Donovan Gilmore were both honored before the Big South Tournament game by league Commissioner Kyle Kallander. Baker was honored for earning a spot on the Big South All-Freshman Team, while Gilmore was honored for garnering a spot on the Big South Men's Basketball All-Academic Team.
