UNC Asheville Drops Road League Game at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville fell 77-48 to Charleston Southern in its final regular season road game of the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Buc Dome.

The game would be all tied up at 4-4 very early in the game after a Coty Jude three-pointer for the Bulldogs (4-25, 2-13 Big South) with 17:09 left in the opening half of action.

The Buccaneers (14-14, 8-7 Big South) would then go on a 10-1 run to own a 14-5 lead with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the first stanza.

Charleston Southern would own a 36-21 lead at the halftime break.

Stephen Edoka led the Bulldogs in the first half with six points. The Bulldogs shot 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) in the first half. Christian Keeling had 15 in the first half for the Buccaneers. Charleston Southern shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29) as a team in the opening half.

The Buccaneers would lead by as many as 18 in the early minutes of the second half, but a 7-0 run over an almost two-minute stretch allowed the Bulldogs to pull within 11 at 47-36 after a DeVon Baker three-pointer with less than 16 minutes to play in the contest.

Charleston Southern would follow up UNC Asheville's run with a 17-0 run to take a 64-36 lead with 10:29 remaining in the game.

The Buccaneers would go on to take the 77-48 win over the Bulldogs.

Baker led the Bulldogs with 17 points. He was the only Asheville player in double figures.

As a team, UNC Asheville finished the game shooting 17-of-49 (34.7 percent). The Buccaneers shot 50 percent (28-of-56) in their win over the Bulldogs.

Four players from Charleston Southern ended their efforts in double figures with Keeling leading the way with 17 points.

With his 17 points, DeVon Baker has now scored in double figures 25 times this season for the Bulldogs overall. He has scored in double figures in 20 out of UNC Asheville's last 21 games.

LJ Thorpe had a career-best two blocks in the road loss at Charleston Southern. Jalen Seegars tied his career high with seven rebounds.

UNC Asheville will honor lone senior Donovan Gilmore before Saturday's regular season finale against High Point at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at Kimmel Arena. The Bulldogs will also honor manager Ryan Oliva. The game will be part of a doubleheader at Kimmel Arena with the women's basketball team hosting Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
