Edwards, Two Homers Lift Bulldogs To 4-3 Win at Furman

02.27.2019 | Baseball

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Behind three solid innings of relief from Jacob Edwards along with home runs from Brandon Lankford and Danny Wilson, the UNC Asheville baseball team earned a 4-3 victory over Furman on Wednesday night at Latham Stadium.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

After holding Asheville scoreless in the top of the first, Furman opened the game with its first run of the contest. Furman's John Michael Boswell tallied a two-out single to deep short to score Jordan Starks.

UNC Asheville nearly quickly retaliated in the top of the second, as it recorded a hit and an error in the frame. Wilson started the frame with a single through the right side. The Bulldogs were able to put two runners on thanks to a throwing error. However, Furman's starting pitcher ended the threat by recording three straight outs.

Following a fast third inning for both squads, Asheville knotted the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth. Lankford smacked a no-doubt, solo home run to left center, which tied the game. The homer was his third of the season.

However, Furman answered in the home half of the fourth via a sacrifice fly and a RBI single to left field to regain the lead, 3-1.

After a hitless fifth inning for both teams, UNC Asheville knotted the game in the sixth. This time Wilson was the Bulldog to knock the game-tying home run, as he cranked a two-out home run to left center. It was his second home run in the last four games, and it tied the game at three apiece.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Jacob Edwards came in to pitch for Asheville in the sixth inning, and he induced a one-out double play to keep Furman off the scoreboard and held the game level at 3-3.

The Bulldogs gained their first lead of the game, 4-3, in the top of the seventh. Jake Madole came in to pinch hit, and he moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Friedholm. Chris Troost drew a five-pitch walk, but Madole was able to move up to third base thanks to a wild pitch. On the next pitch, Furman threw another wild pitch, which allowed Madole to score easily. The Bulldogs threatened to add more runs with one out, but the Paladins limited the damage to one run.

Edwards continued his success on the hill for Asheville, as the rookie went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. In that frame, Edwards posted a pair of swinging strikeouts.

After a scoreless ninth inning for Asheville, Kole Harris came in to earn the save, which was his second of the season and 10th of his career.

Wilson posted the lone multi-hit game for the Bulldogs, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. He smacked the two-run home run in sixth inning.

Brandon Lankford finished the game with a hit, which was a solo, game-tying blast in the fourth inning.

Dominic Freeberger contributed with his team-leading 10th hit of the year. His hit was a double to right center in the fourth inning.

Madole, who came in to pinch hit late in the game, finished the game going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Three Bulldogs had scoreless outings on the hill – Ethan Tressler, Edwards and Harris. Tressler was the third Bulldog reliever, and he worked an inning and posted two punch outs.

Edwards followed Tressler and pitched three solid innings of relief, where he didn't allow a run or walk. He scattered three hits and struck out a trio of Paladins.

Harris closed the game to earn the save, as he totaled a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

All six pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Starting pitcher Greg Gasparro had a team-best four strikeouts in two innings.

With the win, UNC Asheville moves to 2-6 on the season, while Furman drops to 2-4.
