ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville men's basketball coach Mike Morrell has announced the signing of BJ Marable, a 6-9, 220-pound forward from Grace Christian Academy in Knoxville, Tenn.
Grace Christian has become a recognizable program in the state of Tennessee with a history of producing quality basketball players. Marable will be the third player in two years to sign a Division I scholarship from powerhouse Grace Christian.
"We are extremely excited to welcome BJ and his family into our program," Morrell said. "BJ is a versatile player with great size who will fill a variety of needs for us on the floor.
"Bulldog fans will also enjoy getting to know BJ off the floor as well, as he comes from a great family. BJ will thrive here at UNC Asheville."
With his large frame and swift moving ability, Marable found himself rated as the No. 13 prospect in the state of Tennessee by Prep Hoops, jumping 36 spots after a breakout performance and showing this past summer. He played his AAU basketball for PSB Elite, coached by Sim Frazier, out of North Carolina. He competed against some of the best athletes across the country and proved his worth by earning a slew of Division I offers before eventually choosing UNC Asheville.
As a sophomore, Marable was a part of the 2018 state championship team at Grace Christian Academy. He saw his role greatly increase as a junior, and didn't disappoint, averaging 15.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while also blocking 1.2 shots in the process. These accolades garnered him first-team all-district honors as a junior.
He was a dominant force in the blocks but also showcased the skill and agility that caught the eye of the UNC Asheville coaching staff with his combination of power, strength, and ball skills.
Marable will become the third member of the team to hail from the Knoxville area, as redshirt sophomore Tajion Jones played for Oak Ridge High School while freshman Trent Stephney prepped at Bearden High School. It is an area close to Morrell's hometown of Elizabethton the Bulldogs have had success recruiting.
Marable is the son of Kaciana and Broderick Marable, Sr., and has three younger siblings: brothers Keyng and Kyzen, and sister Zoey.
