Bulldogs Set to Tip Off Home Slate Against Brevard

ASHEVILLE
– UNC Asheville's men's basketball team will play in Kimmel Arena for the first time in the 2019-20 season as it hosts Brevard in its home opener against Brevard, 6 p.m., Saturday.

The Bulldogs (1-2) enter Saturday's matchup after falling on the road to Atlantic Coast Conference member Wake Forest, Wednesday. The Bulldogs were able to battle back in the game to tie it up at 72 apiece with less than 10 minutes remaining, but were unable to grab the lead against the Demon Deacons.

Brevard (0-1) lost its season opener, 76-73, at home against Toccoa Falls, Tuesday. The Tornados will play Pensacola Christian at home, Friday, before making the short trek to Asheville, Saturday.

It will be the eighth all-time meeting between UNC Asheville and Brevard in a series that dates back to 2001. The last time the two teams met, November 19, 2016, the Bulldogs won 68-50, led by 19 points from Ahmad Thomas.

Saturday's action will be available streaming on ESPN+ HERE with Matt Stradley and John Williams on the call. The game will also be televised by WSPA-TV Channel 7.

NOTABLY
  • Redshirt sophomore LJ Thorpe earned Big South Player of the Week recognition for his performances during the season's opening week. He led the conference in field goal percentage (.650) in the opening week, and averaged 17 points, six rebounds and three steals to open the year.
  • Redshirt sophomore Tajion Jones led the Bulldogs with 22 points against Wake Forest, recording back-to-back 20-point efforts for the first time in his career. He joins DeVon Baker as the only other player on the roster with consecutive 20-point games in their careers.
  • The Bulldogs have closed out the halves with impressive runs this season, including an 8-2 run at the end of the first and a 12-2 run at the end of the second half at Tennessee. At The Citadel, the Bulldogs finished the first half on a 32-13 run over the final 8:37. The Bulldogs went on a 21-10 run in the final 6:24 to close out the first half against Wake Forest.
  • The Bulldogs have not committed more turnovers than their opponents in any of their first three games of the season, and are currently at +11 in turnover margin. In the takeaway department the Bulldogs rank third in the Big South and 58th nationally in total steals with 26 through three games.
  • As a team, UNC Asheville ranks first in the Big South in free throws made (47) and second in attempts (62). Against Wake Forest, the Bulldogs hit 23-of-30 free throw attempts, reaching the 30-attempt mark for the first time since shooting 32 at Rhode Island, November 10, 2017. DeVon Baker leads the Big South in free throw makes (17) and attempts (22).
  • Over the first three games of the season, LJ Thorpe has hit 16-of-26 field goal attempts and is fourth in the Big South in shooting percentage, hitting 61.5 percent of his shots.
