Cliff Notes
Here are some thoughts from head coach Clifton Bush as UNC Asheville women's soccer closes out the 2019 season:
On how the 2019 season played out:
"We were certainly unable to achieve the goals that we wanted. I was very clear that I wanted to get us through to the playoffs and unfortunately that didn't happen. Sometimes that's just the nature of the competition. I said in the beginning, this is a conference with very high parity and any given game can be won or lost or tied no matter where you are one through 11 in the conference. We unfortunately came out on the wrong side of too many poor results. I do think we created more of an attacking system. Something that we were beginning to threaten towards goal as the season went on. That is definitely something of the effort of the players on the attacking side as well as the defensive side that we can certainly be proud of."
On already having the tools in place for a bright future:
"I think we have a solid state of 24 players this year and everyone contributed their part. The entire group will come back again next year and we will probably add a couple of pieces as well. One thing that we have discovered is that we need a slight attacking punch. We will add our transfer back into the mix next year and I think that's a positive situation. I think we have got the personalities that are right for making us very very successful: Skyler Chillson, Maya Gutman, Gillian Oyos. We have some players that really did some special things in controlling the game and learning how to control tempo for 90 minutes. Alice Walker this year, her sophomore season, she has really grown so much. I'm really looking forward to each one of them being able to grow a little bit more, knowing the expectation of the technical staff and really solidifying what it takes to be successful in this conference. Those are the goals that we really feel like we started working on yesterday. Once we knew this thing was a wrap we really sat down with the team and said 'Look our 2020 season starts today.' That's really what we're trying to work towards now. What does it take to raise our profile, raise our level, in this conference going forward?"
On keeping the team motivated through the last game of the season and already looking at 2020:
"Quite Frankly, I am a pretty lucky coach. You could have a group of women that hang their heads and really throw off the last part of the season. They came into training yesterday full of energy and ready to go. It is a testament to their character and that has very little to do with me, quite frankly. The leadership with Grace Kwiatkowski and Skyler Chillson, really trying to help them be self-sustaining has really been amazing. If there's anything to be proud of, it's the resiliency and their attitude to adversity. They have really stepped into that role and that leadership is going to be really important going forward. For me, its super easy, I don't really have to motivate them for tomorrow. They are a group of high character young women, who want to do well for themselves, they want do well for each other and they want to do well for the community: their friends, their families and the UNC Asheville people that are out there supporting them all season."
