Bulldogs Score Three Goals to Defeat Presbyterian

10.26.2019 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team closed out its 2019 season with a 3-1 victory against Presbyterian Saturday night at Greenwood Field.

The Bulldogs came out on the attack as they put three goals on the board in the first half.

Olivia Lenderman put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the seventh minute with her first career goal. The freshman midfielder took the shot from within the box and placed the ball in the bottom right corner of the net.

The Bulldog offense kept pressing as Gillian Oyos put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 24th minute. Oyos took the ball at midfield and dribbled down field through multiple defenders and took a shot from the top of the box that found the back of the net to put UNC Asheville up by two. Oyos' goal was her team-leading third of the season.

The Bulldogs weren't done yet as Maya Gutman added on with her first goal of the season in the 35th minute. The sophomore midfielder took a pass from freshman Mackenzie Gower and quickly sent the ball over the defenders' heads to ripple the back of the net and give the Bulldogs their largest lead of the season.

Presbyterian responded with a goal in the 38th minute from Samantha Britt to cut the Bulldog's lead to two.

The Bulldog defense secured the win for UNC Asheville with a huge second half. The Blue Hose attempted to eliminate the deficit by taking 16 shots in the second half alone. Despite the many attempts, the Presbyterian offense couldn't find the back of the net as the Bulldog defense rallied to ensure the 3-1 victory.

Goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley, making her ninth start of the year from between the posts, totaled seven saves in the second half and secured 11 total in the match.

The Bulldogs now close their 2019 season with a 5-13 overall record and a record of 3-7 in Big South Conference matches. Their five wins are the most the Bulldogs have had in a season since 2017 and their 3 conference victories are the most that they have totaled since the 2016 season.

Cliff Notes
"I believe that is indicative of how we can play," head coach Clifton Bush said. "I think it shows that we have the determination to actually get victories and score multiple goals in a game. Like I've said before, I think we turned the page on the season after our last match. Everything has been to try to go 1-0 since then. Quite frankly, I feel like everybody executed that really well. The ladies really got on board and we can be proud to say that's how our season ended, 1-0."

On the offense coming out on the attack:
"I think we have spent an entire season trying to find an identity, quite frankly. I think that is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a lot of adversity along with a lot of losses and missed chances. Being able to score three goals in 35 minutes is certainly a testament of the hard work that they have put in. I think there are systematic changes that are there. I mean Kate Sollom came in and changed the game. She has a set of talent and a set of skills that, quite frankly, we might have underutilized a little bit. She is showing us what she can do to put us in situations to score goals. That was one heck of an assist that she gave to Olivia Lenderman. You can kind of now see the attacking power that Olivia has and Skyler Chillson along with Gillian Oyos and Maya Gutman, both getting goals from distance. It's the culmination of a lot of work but I do think it's probably more likely the foundation of what's to come. Now we know what we need to do and we'll prepare all spring and get ready for next fall."
