Bulldogs Hit the Road for Matchup with Gardner-Webb

10.15.2019 | Women's Soccer

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team will hit the road this week for a battle with the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 16, at Greene-Harbison Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The Bulldogs took on Charleston Southern last weekend at Greenwood Field. Courtney McCluskey opened the scoring with her first career goal in the 35th minute on an assist by Alice Walker. Six minutes into the second half Olivia Lenderman took a corner kick that found the foot of Barrett Eidson that Eidson scored for her second goal of the season. The Bulldogs couldn't overcome a strong second half from the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern claimed the 4-2 victory.

The Bulldogs (4-10, 2-4) secured their second Big South Conference victory of the season, Wednesday, October 9, with a 1-0 shutout victory of the Hampton Pirates in Hampton, Va.

Gillian Oyos put the Bulldogs up in the 35th minute with her second goal of the year. The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called in the box. Oyos placed the ball perfectly in the bottom left corner that was just out of reach of the Hampton goalkeeper. That goal proved to be the difference as the Bulldog defense held the Lady Pirates without a goal to secure UNC Asheville's fourth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs defeated USC Upstate, 1-0, at Greenwood Field for their first win of the conference season, September 25. Gillian Oyos scored the game-winning goal in the game's 107th minute to beat the Spartans 1-0. Oyos' goal was scored off of a corner kick by Alice Walker that was deflected by a Spartan defender.

Gardner-Webb has gotten off to a 4-2 start in Big South conference play after finishing the nonconference season with a record of 1-7-1. The Runnin' Bulldogs have gone 2-1 in conference games played at Greene-Harbison Stadium, picking up back to back wins against Winthrop and Hampton before falling to High Point last week in the second overtime.

The last two matchups between UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb have both ended in 1-1 draws.

The Bulldogs will return home for a matchup with Longwood, Saturday, October 19, at Greenwood Field.
