BULLDOG BITES
About UNC Asheville
UNC Asheville hosts High Point with a 7-9 overall record and a 2-3 mark in Big South games. The Bulldogs are currently on a two-game win streak with victories over Campbell and USC Upstate.
In Asheville's last game (at USC Upstate), the Bulldogs claimed their first road win of the season in overtime, 93-86.
Highlighting the league game was senior guard Sonora Dengokl. She tallied 36 points and shot 18-for-22 from the field. The 18 made field goals broke a UNC Asheville Division I record and a Big South record in league-only games. That mark also matched a UNC Asheville and Big South overall record for field goals made in a single game. Her 81.8 field-goal percentage was the best in a NCAA Division I contest since Dec. 4, 2012 (minimum 22 attempts). Also her 36 total points fell three shy of matching a UNC Asheville Division I record and was the most scored by a Big South player since Jan. 10, 2015. Dengokl's 36 points, 18 made field goals and five assists set single-game bests for the Sumter, S.C. native.
Freshman Evonna McGill was also strong against the Spartans, as she ended the contest with a single-game best 15 points. She also made six field goals, which was four more than she has made in a game this year.
Brooke Jordan-Brown was the final Bulldog in double digits, as she totaled 10 points and shot 57.1 percent from the field. She also corralled a team-best eight boards.
With Asheville's 93 points scored against USC Upstate, the Bulldogs extended their perfect streak (6-0) when scoring 60 or more points in a game this season. It was also the second time this year that UNC Asheville shot 50 percent or better in a game.
After totaling 59 points in the last two games, Dengokl raised her points per game average to a team-best 14.9 ppg. She officially eclipsed 100 made field goals, as she totes a .495 field-goal percentage.
Averaging a team-best 32.1 minutes per game, Jessica Wall is averaging double digits this year, 10.2. She leads the Bulldogs in total assists (34) and three-pointers made (42).
Jordan-Brown continues to pace the Bulldogs in rebounding with 5.1 boards per game. Zip Scott (3.9 rpg), Dengokl (3.8), Ali Trani (3.6) and Jimeshia Lawson (3.6) are right behind their teammate. Jordan-Brown is also averaging just under one block per game (0.75).
Scouting High Point
High Point, who was predicted to finish second in the Big South, travels to Asheville with a 10-5 overall mark and a 3-1 record in league games. The Panthers are 3-5 in road games this year with wins over ETSU, USC Upstate and Radford. The Panthers are 6-1 in their last seven games.
Big South Preseason Player of the Year Emma Bockrath paces the Panthers with 16.7 points per game. She has already totaled 250 points this year in 15 starts. She averages 33.5 minutes per game and totes a .440 field-goal percentage, including a .318 three-point percentage. Impressively, she leads the team in rebounding, as she averages 7.1 boards per game.
Three other Panthers are averaging double digits in Lindsey Edwards (11.5 ppg), Shea Morgan (10.7 ppg) and Camryn Brown (10.7 ppg). All three Panthers have totaled 160 or more total points this year. Between Morgan and Edwards, they have combined for 153 rebounds, including 47 offensive rebounds. Edwards has a team-leading 40 steals, while Brown has a team-best 62 assists.
All-Time History Versus the Panthers
Saturday's contest will mark the 47th all-time meeting between the Bulldogs and Spartans. In the last six head-to-head games, both teams have won three games apiece.
Last season the two clubs faced off twice. In the last game inside Kimmel Arena, High Point won 58-45 over the Bulldogs. Eight of the 11 Bulldogs that touched the hardwood scored. Khaila Webb led the team with 10 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Trani and Scott each added nine points and combined for 10 rebounds. Bronaza Fitzgerald grabbed a team-best 12 boards.
In High Point, N.C. last season, the Bulldogs demolished HPU, 78-59. Fitzgerald was nearly unstoppable, as the forward went a perfect 10-for-10 from the field. She finished the game with 23 points and 13 rebounds in 23 minutes of play. Wall also poured in 22 total points and only missed one three-point attempt (6-for-7). Webb added 18 points, which includes six made free throws.
