Non-Conference Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Head coach Mike Morrell unveiled the non-conference schedule for UNC Asheville men's basketball on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018.

The 2018-19 non-conference schedule is one that Morrell believes will prepare his team the right way for Big South Conference play.

"In setting up our schedule we wanted to make sure to find opponents that would give our players the opportunity to not only play against some of the best competition in the country, but also at the same time get us ready for Big South play," Morrell said. "I think with this non-conference schedule we have accomplished what we set out to do and I cannot wait to play our first game at Kimmel Arena on Nov. 8."

UNC Asheville men's basketball is still finalizing times for the non-conference schedule. When officially finalized that information will be passed along. Please note that many game times for the non-conference portion of the 2018-19 schedule will be assigned much later due to television rights.

UNC Asheville men's basketball will officially open its first season under Morrell at home on Nov. 8 against St. Andrews.

The Bulldogs shortly thereafter will then hit the road for the first time in the 2018-19 season to take on NC State in Raleigh, N.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The matchup will mark the first meeting between the two programs since Nov. 23, 2012 when the Bulldogs just missed on upsetting the then 15th-ranked Wolfpack in a narrow 82-80 loss.

UNC Asheville men's basketball will then participate in Northern Kentucky's multi-team event (MTE) that will take place Nov. 16-18 at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights, Ky.

In addition to the Bulldogs, host Northern Kentucky, Coastal Carolina and Manhattan will compete in the event.

The matchup against Coastal Carolina in the tournament will mark the first time the two former league rivals have met since the Bulldogs claimed a thrilling 79-77 overtime win over the Chanticleers at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016.

UNC Asheville will be taking the court against Northern Kentucky and Manhattan in the multi-team event for the first time on the hardwood.

The Bulldogs the next weekend will then welcome Furman to Kimmel Arena on Sunday, Nov. 25. The all-time series between UNC Asheville and Furman is all tied up at 8-8, but the Bulldogs have won five of the last eight in the series.

The month of December will open for UNC Asheville with the Bulldogs traveling to Martin, Tenn. for the second meeting between UT Martin and UNC Asheville in the last three seasons. The Bulldogs last visited the Skyhawks on March 16, 2017 in the opening round of the 2017 CollegeInsider.com (CIT) Postseason Tournament.

UNC Asheville will travel to Auburn on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The matchup will mark UNC Asheville's first trip back to Auburn since picking up a 70-69 win over the Tigers in overtime on Friday, Nov. 13, 2010. The Bulldog victory came in the inaugural game in Auburn Arena.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, UNC Asheville will welcome mountain rival Western Carolina to Kimmel Arena. The contest will be the first between the two at Kimmel Arena since the Bulldogs picked up a thrilling 59-57 win over the Catamounts on Dec. 17, 2016.

UNC Asheville and Wofford will play for the second time in as many years on Saturday, Dec. 15, in Spartanburg, S.C. Buoyed by a 26-2 run over a roughly six-minute stretch in the second half last season, UNC Asheville picked up an impressive 85-65 non-conference home win over Wofford on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017, at Kimmel Arena.

The Bulldogs will travel to DeLand, Fla. on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to take on Stetson for the first time since 1991.

UNC Asheville will play host to Milligan on Friday, Dec. 21 at Kimmel Arena for its final game before the holiday break. Last year in UNC Asheville's 97-60 win over Milligan on Dec. 10, 2017 an impressive three Bulldogs finished with a double-double in the win over the Buffaloes. Milligan is also the alma mater of Morrell, who was a 1,000-point scorer for the Buffaloes.

The Bulldogs return from the holiday break to battle Fayetteville State at Kimmel Arena on Saturday, Dec. 29.

UNC Asheville's final non-conference matchup of the season will see the Bulldogs travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium for the second consecutive season on Monday, Dec. 31. The Bulldogs just missed on knocking off the Commodores last season in a narrow 79-76 loss on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017.

The UNC Asheville men's basketball program is coming off its second straight regular-season Big South Conference championship and third straight postseason appearance with the Bulldogs playing in the 2018 National Invitation Tournament.

UNC Asheville men's basketball picked up its seventh Big South Conference regular-season title (1996-97, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2016-17 and 2017-18) this past season.

The Bulldogs continued to set the standard in the Big South this past season by becoming the first program in league history to win 15 games or more for 11 straight seasons. The Bulldogs have also now won 10 or more league games in a season in a Big South men's basketball record 11 straight seasons.
