UNC Asheville and Furman Battle to 1-1 Tie
09.29.2018 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville and Furman battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday evening at Greenwood Field.
Furman (4-4-1) controlled the run of play for most of the first half with the Paladins collecting their lone goal of the match in the 18th minute when Emery May scored off an assist from Conor Sloan.
Things would change though in the second half with the Bulldogs consistently controlling things in the half.
UNC Asheville had a number of strong chances in the half, but still looked to be headed toward a loss in the latter minutes of the second half.
The resilient Bulldogs (1-7-2) did not go down without a fight and that eventually turned into a beautifully executed header into the back of the net off a Miles Peay cross in the 87th minute. Taylor Durall was the Bulldog who headed the ball into the goal for the Bulldogs for his second goal of the season.
Neither team from there would score in the final minutes of the half to send the game into overtime.
In both overtime periods UNC Asheville had the better of the chances with Peay almost ending things himself with a tremendous solo effort in the box that showed his ability to dance with the ball. In the end after somehow finding openings his shot just missed early in the second overtime period.
The game would eventually end with that same 1-1 scoreline.
Furman had a 22-13 shot advantage in the game, but that advantage is definitely misleading in that only two of the 22 shots were on frame. UNC Asheville put five of its 13 shots on goal.
The Paladins owned a 9-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
BULLDOG BITES
Three With Two
Taylor Durall's second goal of the season allowed him to tie Izaiah Vignali and Lane Carroll for the team lead with two goals each. Durall also has an assist on the year, which ties him with Vignali for the overall team lead in points with five.

While they were being introduced before the match the UNC Asheville men's soccer team was escorted on to the pitch by athletes from the Buncombe County Special Olympics.
Building Bulldogs
Last year, UNC Asheville dropped its match at Furman, 4-0. This season, the Bulldogs battled the Paladins to a 1-1 tie. The 1-1 tie more than shows the growth of the Bulldog program over the early part of the 2018 season with UNC Asheville collecting just its fourth-ever positive result in its 19th all-time meeting against a Furman program that has long been considered one of the best in the country.
#ThePursuit Man of the Match
For his strong efforts for the UNC Asheville defense in the 1-1 tie with Furman the UNC Asheville coaching staff chose Mac Gourlay as #ThePursuit Man of the Match. Gourlay played all 110 minutes in the match for the Bulldogs.
Quotable
"It was again a tale of two halves," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said after the match. "I thought we were pretty poor in the first half to be fair. At halftime I told the guys that I was not sure we could play worse and we did what we wanted to do in the second half. It was great. I'll be honest – and everybody feels this way at home – but anybody watching at home, and there were definitely chances on both sides, but we should have won the game. That's probably the next step for us, especially with the chances we had in the second overtime. We've got to find a way for those balls to go into the back of the net. That's the next step for us. At the same time, we played a very good Furman team, who is very well-regarded and we gave them fits.
"Now we've got to get our bodies right because we've got a very important contest at High Point, which is a tough place to play. As we've seen the results from tonight and last night the Big South is wide open, so we need to start moseying down the road with the rest of the teams so we don't get left behind. That's our focus right now in going to get a positive result at High Point."
