ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Mike Morrell recently announced the addition of DeVon Baker.
Baker is a 6-foot-2 point guard out of SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
"This is another tremendous addition to our family," Morrell said. "DeVon is a strong and athletic lead guard, who I know that all Bulldog fans are going to love having in our program."
In his only season at SPIRE, Baker averaged 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. He helped lead SPIRE to a 24-8 record and a spot in the national prep championships.
Baker shot 49 percent from the field and over 40 percent from beyond the arc for SPIRE.
Before joining SPIRE, Baker averaged 16.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game for Dunbar High School in Dayton, Ohio. One year earlier, he averaged 11.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists, 1.6 steals per game for Dunbar.
Baker joins 6-foot-7 forward Jax Levitch and 6-foot-2, 175-pound combo guard Cress Worthy as the latest to join the UNC Asheville men's basketball program.
They join a UNC Asheville men's basketball program coming off its second straight regular-season Big South Conference championship and third straight postseason appearance with the Bulldogs playing in the 2018 National Invitation Tournament.
UNC Asheville men's basketball picked up its seventh Big South Conference regular-season title (1996-97, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2016-17 and 2017-18) this past season.
The Bulldogs continued to set the standard in the Big South this past season by becoming the first program in league history to win 15 games or more for 11 straight seasons. The Bulldogs have also now won 10 or more league games in a season in a Big South men's basketball record 11 straight seasons.
