ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To continue the Big South Conference schedule, the UNC Asheville baseball team travels to Winthrop for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 20, in Rock Hill, S.C.
Projected Starters
Friday: So. RHP Blake Brown (0-3, 6.38 ERA) vs. Jr. RHP Nate Pawelczyk (4-4, 4.11 ERA)
Saturday: So. LHP Greg Gasparro (1-5, 4.70 ERA) vs. So. RHP Zach Peek (3-4, 4.40 ERA)
Sunday: TBA vs. Sr. RHP Daniel Willcutt (2-3, 3.49 ERA)
About the Bulldogs
After sweeping the season series over Wofford, UNC Asheville enters the conference showdown with a 10-26 overall record and a 5-10 mark in Big South Conference contests.
On the year, the Bulldogs are led by juniors Danny Wilson and Carmine Pagano. Both players have a .284 batting average, as they have combined for 67 total starts. Pagano has a team-leading 42 hits on the year. Eight of those have been doubles, as he has also tallied 18 RBIs. Wilson has connected with 33 hits, including a trio of doubles and a home run. Brandon Lankford and Chris Troost each have 31 hits, as they have each appeared in 35 games with 34 starts. Lankford has a team-leading 15 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, and Troost has six doubles to go along with 14 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
On the hill for Asheville, Eric Whitecavage is one of the biggest keys out of the bullpen, as he has appeared in a team-high 15 games. He sports a 2-1 record with a 3.71 ERA. He has totaled 17 innings and has limited opponents to a .228 batting average. Cody Wilson, who earned his first collegiate victory on Wednesday's 5-3 win over Wofford, has the team's lowest ERA (1.69), as he has appeared in five games. He has limited opponents to a .176 batting average and has only allowed three hits. Kole Harris earned his way into the UNC Asheville record books, as he earned his fourth save of the season in the two-run win over the Terriers. He is now tied for 10th in program history for the most saves in a single season.
Gasparro has been one of the most consistent starting pitchers for Asheville, as the sophomore has started nine games this year. He has worked 46 total frames this year and holds batters to a .283 clip. He has also struck out 32 batters and has allowed just 24 earned runs on the year.
Scouting the Eagles
Winthrop enters the weekend series with a 17-22 overall mark and a 9-6 Big South record this year. The Eagles started conference play red-hot, as they won six straight games. During that stretch, Winthrop swept the first two Big South series over Presbyterian and Longwood.
Offensively, Mitch Spires leads the attack, as the senior infielder sports a team-leading .323 batting average. Spires has started all 39 games and has connected with 51 hits. Of those hits, 10 have been doubles, while five have been home runs. He has also touched home a team-leading 28 times and has driven in 27 RBIs as well. Alex Raines has appeared in 32 games, including 28 starts, and he totes a .287 batting average. He has poked 27 hits, tallied 10 RBIs and touched home nine times.
On the hill for Winthrop, the Eagles rely on starting pitchers Pawelczyk and Peek. Both Eagles have each started nine games and have combined for seven wins. Pawelczyk has worked 57 total innings and holds opponents to a .218 batting average, and Peek has twirled 57.1 frames and has struck out 70 batters with only 14 walks.
Dalton Whitaker, Willcutt and Jason Crumley are Winthrop's key relievers, as each have an ERA of 3.65 or lower. Whitaker has appeared in 18 games (one start) en route to working 21.1 innings.
