UNC Asheville Hosts Manhattan for a Three-Game Series; Announces Important Schedule Changes to Future Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team hosts Manhattan for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 9, at Greenwood Field.

Important Schedule Changes

The weekend series versus Manhattan has been altered due to expected heavy rainfall on Sunday, March 11.

Friday, March 9, will now be a doubleheader with the first game starting at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Field. The second game of the doubleheader will commence following the conclusion of the first game. The two teams will then conclude the three-game series on Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m.

Also, both UNC Asheville and Appalachian State have decided to reschedule its head-to-head games this season. The first game against the Mountaineers is set for Wednesday, March 21, at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Field. The two teams will make up the postponed contest for Tuesday, April 24, at Appalachian State at 5 p.m.

Friday Game One: So. LHP Greg Gasparro (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. RHP Marc Galvan (0-1, 2.77 ERA)

Friday Game Two: Sr. RHP Nick Boyles (0-0, 6.00 ERA) vs. LHP Joe Jacques (1-1, 2.63 ERA)

Saturday: R-So. LHP Jordan Carr (1-1, 2.87 ERA) vs. RHP Joe DiNizio (0-1, 8.38 ERA)

About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville enters the three-game series with a 2-9 overall record and an 0-1 mark at Greenwood Field. 

In it's last five games, UNC Asheville has three players hitting above .300 - Carmine Pagano, Andrew Friedholm and Joe Zayatz. Zayatz has the highest batting average in the last five games (.375), but Pagano has been a terror at the plate. The junior has tallied seven hits, including three multi-hit performances. He also has a pair of RBIs in five starts. Zayatz has recorded eight at-bats in the last five games, which included a pair of starts. The redshirt senior has tallied a trio of hits, as two went for extra-bases.

Defensively, Carr has been a workhorse, as he has started a pair of games in the last five contests. The redshirt sophomore has combined for 10.1 innings, where he has allowed four runs and struck out five. Jesse Juday and Boyles have been solid out of the bullpen, as each have made two appearances in the last five games. Juday has worked 2.2 innings and has only allowed one hit.

Scouting Manhattan College

The Jaspers enter the series with a 2-8 overall mark, as all 10 games have been played on the road. In fact, Manhattan opens its season with 33 straight road games, as its first home contest of the year will be on April 14 versus Fairfield. 

The Jaspers opened their season dropping its first six games before rebounding at VCU by winning two of the three games in Richmond, Va. In its most recent contest, Manhattan lost 4-3 to Stony Book, despite solid pitching from three Jasper pitchers.

Will Trochiano and Adam Genners are the two biggest offensive threats for the Jaspers, as each are hitting at a .333 clip in the first 10 games of the season. Trochiano has started all 10 contests, as he has connected with 12 hits, two doubles, one home run, seven RBIs and six runs scored. Genners has only started in four games, but he has six hits to go along with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Joe Jacques and Marc Galvan have been solid starting pitching options for the Jaspers, as they have combined to start five games this year. Jacques has twirled 13.2 innings, where he has scattered 30 hits and allowed 17 runs (four earned). He has also struck out 16 opponents. Galvan has tossed 13.0 innings this year and has allowed 15 hits and limits opponents to a .278 batting average. 

T.J. Stuart is one of the key relievers for Manhattan. He has appeared in five games, struck out eight and recorded one save.
