03.24.2018 | Men's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After 21 years either as a student-athlete, an assistant coach or head coach, Nick McDevitt is leaving the UNC Asheville men's basketball program to become head coach at Middle Tennessee.
The 2001 UNC Asheville graduate has been a part of six of the seven Big South Conference regular-season crowns (1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2016-17 and 2017-18) and four of the five Big South Tournament championships (2003, 2011, 2012 and 2016) in program history.
"We cannot thank Nick enough for his efforts for UNC Asheville men's basketball," UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone said. "Nick has elevated our program over the years, and our brand is considered one of the tops in Mid-Major college basketball thanks to his dedication along with those of his staff and players. The success that Nick has brought to our program is why I know that this will be an extremely attractive position, and I am excited about starting our national search for a replacement. Speaking on behalf of the entire UNC Asheville athletics department, we wish nothing but continued success for Lauren, Nick and the entire McDevitt family."
McDevitt departs UNC Asheville owning a 98-66 overall record during his five years at the helm of UNC Asheville men's basketball. The Bulldogs were an impressive 60-28 against Big South Conference foes during McDevitt's time in charge of the program.
Over the last four years, McDevitt has engineered the most wins over a four-year stretch in UNC Asheville men's basketball history with 81 victories.
UNC Asheville men's basketball for the first time in program history has won 20 or more games for three straight seasons. UNC Asheville won 22 games in the 2015-16 season, 23 in 2016-17 and 21 in the 2017-18 season.
McDevitt joined former Winthrop head coach and current Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall as the only coaches to win at least 15 games in their first five seasons in the Big South Conference.
McDevitt joined Marshall and Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis as the only coaches in league history with three straight 20-win seasons.
Under McDevitt's guidance, UNC Asheville men's basketball turned its home facility into one of the toughest places to play in all of college basketball. UNC Asheville is 26-2 over the last two seasons during the regular season at Kimmel Arena. The Bulldogs have won 23 of their last 25 at Kimmel Arena overall.
"UNC Asheville has been privileged to have Nick McDevitt as our men's head basketball coach for the past five years. His success at UNC Asheville is undeniable, having been part of five of our six Big South Conference regular-season crowns either as a player, assistant coach or head coach," said Joe Urgo, interim chancellor, UNC Asheville. "His energy and enthusiasm for the sport, the team and UNC Asheville has taken our men's basketball program to new heights. He will be a great addition to the Middle Tennessee program and will always be a UNC Asheville Bulldog. We look forward to beginning the search for our next head coach. Thanks to the efforts of Coach McDevitt and many others over the years, this is a highly-coveted position. We look forward to continuing to build on the current momentum and bright future of UNC Asheville."
Special Thank You From Coach McDevitt
