03.20.2018 | Women's Golf

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Taylor Hinson improved 10 positions on the final day of the Briar's Creek Invitational to finish tied for 20th, while the UNC Asheville golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

Final Round Highlights

Hinson jumped 10 spots on the final 18 holes of play at the Briar's Creek Invitational, as she posted an even-par 72 on Tuesday. The even-par round matched her lowest score in her collegiate career, which she has now carded three times. In the two-day outing, the Belmont, N.C. native posted a 3-over 219 (73-74-72), which put her in a five-way tie for 20th. She even matched the 54th ranked individual in the country - Bing Singhsumalee of Illinois.

Becca Black and Janie Thomas matched each other in the final round, as the duo both inked a 7-over 79. Thomas posted three birdies on the final 18 holes, and Black carded a pair of birdies, which came on two par-5 holes.

Adelyn Deery had the second-best overall finish for UNC Asheville, as the sophomore finished tied for 67th. In the two-day tournament, she posted a 16-over 232 (78-74-80). With her 2-over 74 round on Monday, it marked her lowest collegiate round.

As a team, UNC Asheville placed 16th in a highly-competitive field. The Bulldogs recorded a 65-over 929 (312-307-310), which is the lowest three-round score they have inked since the NKU Fall Classic in September of 2017.

No. 29 North Carolina won the tournament with a 16-under 848 (286-279-283). Big South Conference member and nationally-ranked Campbell earned runner-up status, as the Camels carded a 10-under 854 (282-284-288).

Kelly Whaley of North Carolina won the individual title, as she posted a 12-under 204 in the two-day outing. She capped off the tournament with a 3-under 69, as she finished with a five-stroke lead on Desiree Andersson of Campbell.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs take nearly two weeks off from the links, as they will conclude their regular season at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. Appalachian State hosts the two-day tournament, which begins on April 1 in Morganton, N.C.
