Vannatta Named NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Academic All-America® Selection

2017-18 Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Team
AUSTIN, Texas – UNC Asheville men's basketball senior standout Kevin Vannatta has been selected to the 2017-18 Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Vannatta was a third-team Academic All-America® selection.
"We are very proud of what Kevin has been able to accomplish, both on and off the court, during his time here at UNC Asheville," UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt said. "To end his career as an Academic All-American is special. He puts a tremendous amount of effort into everything he does in his school work, athletics, community service and other civic activities. Kevin exemplifies the true meaning of the term student-athlete and he is an outstanding ambassador for our University and our basketball program."
The senior guard from Upper Arlington, Ohio is just the second in UNC Asheville men's basketball history to earn NCAA Academic All-America® honors. Ralf Melis was also a third-team Academic All-America® choice in the 1994-95 season.
In total, four men's basketball players at UNC Asheville have garnered Academic All-America® honors with Randy Pallas an NAIA Academic All-America selection in both the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons and Rod Healy an NAIA Honorable Mention All-America choice in the 1970-71 season.
The 2017-18 Big South Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Vannatta as an Accounting major at UNC Asheville presently owns a 3.93 grade-point average to go along with his 1,232 points and 571 rebounds in his career.
Vannatta has put together one of the most impressive careers in UNC Asheville men's basketball history. He is the 87th player in Big South Conference men's basketball history with over 500 rebounds and he became just the 57th player in league history with over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Vannatta represents UNC Asheville and the Big South Conference on the NCAA Division I National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Vannatta was also named to the 2016-17 and 2017-18 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District® 3 Men's Basketball first-team in addition to being tabbed as a DI-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete last season. He was also an official candidate for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award.
