League-Leading Bulldogs Battle Back in Second Half to Pick Up Road Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – UNC Asheville men's basketball erased a 14-point deficit in the second half to pick up its sixth straight win in a 78-73 road victory over Longwood at Willet Hall.

UNC Asheville (17-9, 10-3 Big South Conference) opened the game on a 13-4 run with Raekwon Miller and Jonathan Baehre combining to score 11 of the first 13 points in the game for the Bulldogs.

Longwood (6-20, 3-10 Big South Conference) would not let the lead last long though in the opening minutes with the Lancers pulling to within two at 20-18 with 11:27 remaining in the first half. The game would be tied at 20-all with just over nine minutes left in the opening half of action.

Longwood would lead by as many as eight at 38-30 in the final minutes of the first half, but UNC Asheville would close the half on a 6-2 run to pull within four at intermission at 40-36.

UNC Asheville closed out the first half shooting 37 percent (10-of-27) as a team, while Longwood shot 50 percent (15-of-30) as a team in the first half. Baehre led the Bulldogs in the first stanza with 11 points and six rebounds.

The second half would open with Longwood going on a 14-2 run to extend its lead to 52-38 with under 16 minutes left in the contest.

The Bulldogs would fight their way back into the game over the next few minutes behind a 15-3 run that pulled them back to within two at 55-53 after a MaCio Teague three-pointer with 12:24 left in the game.

UNC Asheville would keep getting closer over the next few minutes from there with the Bulldogs eventually taking the lead at 62-61 with 8:10 to play in the second half after a Baehre layup.

The Bulldogs would control things the rest of the way in their eventual five-point win.

Four Bulldogs finished in double figures with Teague leading the way with 20 points.

Both Baehre and Raekwon Miller closed out their efforts in the Bulldog win with career days.

Baehre ended his night with a career-best 19 points to go along with seven rebounds. He was an impressive 9-of-12 from the field in the game.

Miller ended his evening with a career-high tying 19 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.

Kevin Vannatta was the final Bulldog in double figures with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. He was 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the game. 

UNC Asheville closed out the second half shooting 70 percent (14-of-20) to end the game shooting 51.1 percent (24-for-47) as a team overall. Longwood shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) as a team in its loss to the Bulldogs.

Damarion Geter led three Lancers in double figures with 19 points.

Bulldogs Extend Special League Streak
UNC Asheville with its road win over Longwood extended its own Big South Conference record by winning its 10th league game of the year. The Bulldogs have now won 10 or more league games in a season in a Big South Conference men's basketball record 11 straight seasons.
 
Continuing to Set the Standard
UNC Asheville men's basketball has now won at least 15 games in a season for a league-record 11 consecutive seasons. UNC Asheville's 11th straight 15 or more win season allowed the Bulldogs to pass the old mark of 10 it shared with Winthrop (1998-08). UNC Asheville has won 15 or more games every year since the 2007-08 season. 

Alone at the Top
UNC Asheville's road win over Longwood allowed the Bulldogs to continue to have sole possession of first place in the Big South Conference with a 10-3 league mark. To see the full league standings, please visit HERE

Playing Great Basketball
After starting Big South play at 1-2, UNC Asheville has now won six straight and nine of its last 10 games to move to 17-9 overall and 10-3 in league play.

UNC Asheville will next play host to Radford at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Kimmel Arena. UNC Asheville is calling for a "Blue Out" as part of a special Autism Awareness and Acceptance Weekend. There will also be a special event for Autism Speaks with Alpha Xi Delta.

In addition, the first 300 fans at Kimmel Arena receive a free blue tie-dye Asheville skyline t-shirt. During halftime, the Fairview Flyers will also perform.
