UNC Asheville Splits To Conclude Play at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Sophomore Becca Black finished her two-day outing undefeated, as the UNC Asheville golf team split to conclude its play at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge.
Third Round Highlights
In the first round on Tuesday, Black came out as the only winner for the Bulldogs as the sophomore defeated Ohio's Marissa Balish, 1UP. The Elizabethtown, Ky. native saw her lead get as high as three, but Balish tied the head-to-head on the ninth hole. After turning the corner, Black won the first two holes and ended the opening round 1UP.
Janie Thomas and Taylor Hinson finished their individual matches all square. Alsip was tied or leading Nicole Smiley for the first 11 holes, and Hinson was tied or leading for the final 15 holes of play.
Despite three strong individual showings, No. 7 Ohio edged UNC Asheville 2-1-2 in the third round of the challenge.
Final Round Highlights
The Bulldogs rebounded on a high note to end their play at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge. UNC Asheville upset No. 6 and host school Bowling Green 2-1-2 behind Thomas' and Hinson's 3&2 victories.
Thomas jumped out to a three-hole lead eight holes into the contest. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native played even for the final nine holes to secure her first victory of the tournament.
Hinson held a narrow one-hole advantage after the first nine holes, but after making the turn, the freshman won three holes to earn her 3&2 victory on the 16th hole.
Black finished all square as she went undefeated in the two-day tournament. The sophomore led for 15 holes, but BGSU's Jessica Madry erased a two-hole deficit on the final five holes.
What's Next?
The Bulldogs will take two weeks off as they return to the links on Feb. 19 to compete in the Jacksonville Intercollegiate. The two-day outing is hosted by Jacksonville and will be held at the Amelia National Golf Club in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
