Women’s Basketball Defends Kimmel Arena; Edges ETSU, 56-55

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Keeping its undefeated record at home intact (5-0), the UNC Asheville women's basketball team escaped ETSU on Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs edged the Bucs, 56-55, inside Kimmel Arena.

The win over ETSU marks the third Southern Conference member the Bulldogs have defeated this year inside Kimmel Arena – Western Carolina and Wofford.

The Bulldogs were fantastic in the first half, as they held a 13-point advantage at the halftime break (27-14).

Sophomore guard Nadiria Evans was outstanding in the first half, as the Gainesville, Fla. native posted 13 points. She went 4-for-9 from the field and went an unblemished 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Jimeshia Lawson and Tiffany Wilson added four points each in the first 20 minutes of play.

As a team, UNC Asheville outrebounded the Bucs by 13 (25-12) in the first half. More impressively, the Bulldogs held a 17-5 advantage on the offensive glass. The Bulldogs also forced ETSU into 15 turnovers, as Asheville claimed six steals.

The Buccaneers snuck back late into the game, as they held a two-point lead with just under eight minutes left in regulation. The two teams started battling back-and-forth, but Zip Scott hit the game-winning field goal with 23 seconds to seal the one-point win.

Scott was nearly perfect from the field in the second half (4-for-5), as the junior guard tallied nine points in the final 20 minutes of play.

Lawson was perfect from the hardwood in the second half (3-for-3), as the freshman posted eight points.

Sonora Dengokl and Evans contributed five points each in the final 20 minutes.

Overall, Evans had a career-high and game-high 18 points. The sophomore went 6-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Lawson contributed 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting. The freshman also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.

Scott added nine points, while Dengokl posted seven points in the final non-conference home game.

UNC Asheville moves to 5-3 overall on the year, as ETSU drops to 1-11 on the season.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville will open a four-game roadswing with a trip to Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Tipoff is set for noon, eastern, as it will serve as the Golden Eagles' Education Day game.
