Bulldogs Battle But Fall to Manhattan in Final Game of KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic
11.18.2018 | Men's Basketball
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – UNC Asheville men's basketball closed out its efforts in the KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic with a 54-38 loss to Manhattan at BB&T Arena on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018.
UNC Asheville (1-4) opened the game by scoring five of the first seven points to own a very early 5-2 advantage. Jalen Seegars hit a three-pointer with 16:24 left in the first half to give Asheville the early lead.
The two teams would be all tied up at 11-11 after a DeVon Baker layup with 5:59 to play in the opening stanza.
Manhattan (2-3) would go on to hold a slight 21-20 lead over the Bulldogs at the halftime break. Seegars led Asheville in the first half with eight points.
Asheville once again opened a half on a 5-2 run to take a 25-23 lead over Manhattan with 17:47 remaining in the contest. The two teams were knotted at 28-all with 11:39 left in the game.
The Bulldogs would be down 38-30 with 8:05 remaining, but back-to-back jumpers by Baker cut that lead in half to 38-34 with 7:23 to play.
That would prove to be as close as Asheville would be able to get with Manhattan picking up the victory.
Baker led the Bulldogs in the contest with a game-high 18 points. He was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Baker also had two rebounds and two steals.
Jeremy Peck led the Bulldogs in boards with nine. He also had five points, one block, one assist and one steal.
Tyler Reynolds led two from Manhattan in double figures with 15.

Quotable
"I was really proud of our effort today," UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Mike Morrell said. "We found out going into the game that Donovan Gilmore was not going to be able to play much, so we knew it was going to be even tougher down a man. Three games in three days is tough. I obviously would have liked to shoot the ball better, but it is tough with their style of play. I thought in the first half we did a good job of taking care of the ball and then at the same time turning them over. In the second half, we had cut it down to just four with over seven minutes to play, but we did not close the game the way we would have liked.
"I thought it was a very informative and educational weekend. Obviously we would have liked to come away with a win for our efforts, but now it's just about battling, getting better and getting healthy."
