UNC Asheville Stays Perfect at Home With 90-80 League Win Over Longwood

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It's a tough place to play for visiting teams.
In fact, it's been one of the toughest places to play in the country for visiting teams ever since UNC Asheville (9-8, 2-2 Big South Conference) began playing in the facility in the 2011-12 season.
UNC Asheville's 90-80 win over Longwood on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, was the Bulldogs' 75th win overall, and even more impressively, 50th win in just 60 games against Big South Conference competition at Kimmel Arena. UNC Asheville is now 75-16 overall and 50-10 against Big South foes within the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena inside the Sherrill Center.
Win No. 50 against league competition inside Kimmel Arena for the Bulldogs saw the two teams tied at 19-all with 11:41 to play in the first half.
UNC Asheville from there went on a 15-3 run over the next few minutes to lead the Lancers, 34-22, after a Kevin Vannatta layup with 7:19 remaining in the opening half of action.
The two teams would enter the halftime break with the Bulldogs leading Longwood (4-13, 1-3 Big South Conference), 47-37.
UNC Asheville would lead by as many as 23 points in the second half before collecting the 10-point win.
The Bulldogs shot 55.7 percent (34-of-61) as a team in the win over Longwood, while the Lancers shot 53.1 percent (26-of-49) as a team. The Bulldogs once again were solid from the free throw line as a team where they shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17).
UNC Asheville outrebounded Longwood, 37-21, in the game. The Bulldogs held a decisive 9-1 advantage in offensive rebounds with the Bulldogs collecting a strong 15-2 advantage in second-chance points.
In the win over Longwood, Ahmad Thomas became just the second player in Big South Conference history with over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 200 steals and 200 assists. Thomas finished the win over the Lancers with 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
MaCio Teague led all in the game with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
In total, the Bulldogs had four players in double figures with Raekwon Miller and Jonathan Baehre each posting 12 points in the UNC Asheville win. Baehre was 5-of-6 from the field in the game, including a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. He also had one block. Miller also had three assists and two rebounds to go along with his 12 points.
Charles Glover led Longwood in its loss with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.

Ahmad Thomas was already just the fifth player in Big South Conference men's basketball history with over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 steals, but now he is also just the second player in league history with over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 200 steals and 200 assists. Thomas ended the win over Longwood with 1,329 points, 611 rebounds, 222 steals and 203 assists. Thomas is now also just 11 points away from becoming one of the top-15 scorers in UNC Asheville history. He moved into the top-10 in school history in rebounds with his now 611 in the win over Longwood. He is currently tied with Paul Allen (1980-84) for career rebounds with the 611 boards.

In addition to securing the 75th win overall and the 50th victory over league foes at Kimmel Arena in the win over Longwood, UNC Asheville also extended its home winning streak to 16. The Bulldogs are 7-0 on the 2017-18 season at Kimmel Arena.
