Strong Close to First Half Helps Propel UNC Asheville to Road Win at Presbyterian College

CLINTON, S.C. – A dominating close to the first half helped propel UNC Asheville men's basketball to a 20-point 76-56 road win over Presbyterian College on Friday, Jan. 12, at the Templeton Center.
UNC Asheville (10-8, 3-2 Big South Conference) opened the game with Ahmad Thomas scoring their first six points to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead very early on in the contest.
The Bulldogs would lead 11-8 after a Kevin Vannatta three-pointer with just over 13 minutes left in the first half. The three-pointer would be the first points of an 8-0 spurt for the Bulldogs that saw UNC Asheville lead 16-8 after a Jonathan Baehre jumper with 12:13 remaining in the opening half of action.
UNC Asheville would continue extending its lead from there with a 16-3 run over almost four minutes garnering the Bulldogs a 24-11 advantage with roughly nine and a half minutes left until intermission.
The Bulldogs would continue to keep up the pressure on the Blue Hose over the next few minutes with a Teague midrange jumper closing out a 14-0 run over an almost four-minute stretch to give the Bulldogs a 45-23 lead with 42 seconds left in the half. UNC Asheville would take that same advantage into the halftime break.
UNC Asheville held Presbyterian College (8-10, 1-4 Big South Conference) scoreless for the final 5:09 of the first half. The Blue Hose turned the basketball over four times during that stretch with UNC Asheville ending the first half owning a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Bulldogs shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) as a team in the first half, while the Blue Hose shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24). Thomas led the Bulldogs in the first half with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
UNC Asheville's largest lead of the game came in the early minutes of the second half with the Bulldogs leading by 25 with 15:12 to play in the game.
The Bulldogs would lead by double digits for the rest of the game with UNC Asheville leading still by 20 at 74-54 with 1:38 left in the contest after a Baehre dunk. The Bulldogs from there would keep that same lead at the final whistle in the 20-point win.
Thomas led three Bulldogs in double figures with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Teague closed out his day scoring 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. He also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The final Bulldog in double figures was Raekwon Miller. He concluded his evening with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
J. C. Younger was the only Presbyterian College player in double figures with 13 points.
The Bulldogs finished their road win shooting 55.4 percent (31-of-56) as a team. The Bulldogs limited the Blue Hose to just 36 percent (18-of-50) shooting as a team.
