Bulldogs Lead From Start-to-Finish in Home League Win Over Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A dominating run late in the second half allowed UNC Asheville men's basketball to pull away from Charleston Southern in a 83-73 home Big South Conference victory over the Buccaneers at Kimmel Arena on Monday, Jan. 15.

UNC Asheville (11-8, 4-2 Big South Conference) in securing its third straight win led from start-to-finish with the Bulldogs commencing the contest on an 11-0 run that was punctuated by a three-pointer by Ahmad Thomas with 17:35 remaining in the first half of action.

The Bulldogs would keep piling it on the Buccaneers over the opening few minutes of the game with UNC Asheville leading 26-12 with 12:13 left in the first half after a MaCio Teague three-pointer.

The three-pointer would be one of Teague's five from beyond the arc in the first half. Teague closed out the first half with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting overall. He was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in the first stanza.

Teague's 23 points in the first half helped the Bulldogs to a 47-42 lead over the Buccaneers at intermission.

UNC Asheville shot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) as a team in the first half, while Charleston Southern (6-11, 1-5 Big South Conference) shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30).

The first few minutes of the second half had both teams battling back and forth with the Bulldogs clinging to a two-point lead at 54-52 with 14:26 left in the game.

From there the Bulldogs took over with UNC Asheville going on a 27-9 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 20-point 81-61 lead over Charleston Southern with 4:22 remaining.

UNC Asheville would never look back in its eventual 10-point win.

The Bulldogs finished the contest shooting 61.7 percent (29-of-47) as a team, while the Bulldogs limited Charleston Southern to just 40 percent (10-of-25) shooting in the second half to see the Buccaneers finish the contest shooting 47.3 percent (26-of-55) overall.

The Bulldogs shot an impressive 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from beyond the arc in the game. The Bulldogs finished their efforts shooting 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.

Three Bulldogs finished in double figures overall with Teague leading the way with 27 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist.

Ahmad Thomas was 8-of-10 from the field en route to 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in the Bulldog win.

The final Bulldog in double figures, Raekwon Miller finished his night with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Miller was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the UNC Asheville victory.

Kevin Vannatta did not finish in double figures in the UNC Asheville win, but he barely missed on a double-double in the contest with eight rebounds and seven points. He also had four assists.

Christian Keeling led four Buccaneers in double figures with 22 points.

BULLDOG BITES

The league win over Charleston Southern allowed the Bulldogs to extend their home winning streak to 17. UNC Asheville is now 76-16 overall and 51-10 against Big South foes within the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena inside the Sherrill Center. The Bulldogs are 8-0 on the 2017-18 season at Kimmel Arena.

Dominating a Half of Play
MaCio Teague's 23 points in the first half against Charleston Southern marked the second time this season and third time in his career that he posted 20 or more points in a single half. Earlier this year, Teague had 20 in the first half in the 82-79 overtime win over Austin Peay on Nov. 19, 2017. Teague also had 24 points in the first half in UNC Asheville's 91-69 Big South Conference road win over Longwood on Feb. 11, 2017.

Strong from Downtown
UNC Asheville shot a season-best 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from beyond the arc as a team in the win over Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs were led by Teague's five treys. Teague now has three games this season where he has connected on five or more three-pointers.

Subway Sandwich Artist for a Great Cause
UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt will once again make an appearance as a Subway Sandwich artist to help raise awareness and support for the fight against cancer through the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign. McDevitt is scheduled to join Western Carolina head coach Larry Hunter on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Subway at the Oakley Plaza at 801 Fairview Road, Asheville, NC 28803. They are scheduled to be at the Subway from 12-1 p.m. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Locally, the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association has joined the effort to promote healthy living, raise awareness and support for the fight against cancer. Donations in any amount can be made at the checkout of participating SUBWAY® restaurants from Jan. 15 through Feb. 28 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the local Coaches vs. Cancer program. ESPNU has selected the UNC Asheville at Winthrop men's basketball contest scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18 as its Big South Wildcard Selection broadcast, it was announced recently by the Big South Conference office.  

The game time will be 9 p.m. inside the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C. Matt Schick (play-by-play) and Paul Biancardi (analyst) will handle the call from courtside.

"We are excited once again to be able to showcase our program on national television," UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt said. "UNC Asheville-Winthrop is one of the best rivalries in mid-major, and really, all of college basketball. It should be a fun atmosphere."
