Bulldogs Fall on Road at Winthrop

01.19.2018 | Men's Basketball

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball was unable to pick up a Big South Conference road win at Winthrop on Thursday, Jan. 18, with the Bulldogs falling 85-58 to the Eagles.

The two teams would play close early with UNC Asheville (11-9, 4-3 Big South Conference) narrowly trailing Winthrop (10-8, 4-3 Big South Conference), 11-10, with 12:18 to play in the opening half of action.

That would prove to be as close as the Bulldogs would be able to get in a game that the Eagles led from start-to-finish.

Ahmad Thomas led the Bulldogs in the contest with his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He picked up four of his 11 rebounds on the offensive glass.

The only other Bulldog in double figures was MaCio Teague with 14 points. He also had four rebounds.

Five Eagles finished in double figures with Andres Broman leading Winthrop with 19 points. Xavier Cooks collected a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

UNC Asheville closed out its loss shooting 34.8 percent (24-of-69) as a team, while Winthrop shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) as a team.

BULLDOG BITES

Vannatta Joins Exclusive Club Once Again
Kevin Vannatta became the 87th player in Big South Conference men's basketball history with 500 rebounds with his three boards in the Winthrop game. Vannatta, who already surpassed 1,000 points earlier this season, also became just the 57th player in league history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Vannatta is the 18th player in UNC Asheville men's basketball to collect 500 rebounds in their career. Vannatta presently has 1,122 points and exactly 500 rebounds.

Thomas' Double-Double
In picking up his fourth double-double of the season with his 20 points and 11 rebounds against Winthrop, Ahmad Thomas now has 16 career double-doubles.

Quotable
"We didn't execute well enough on either end of the floor to beat a good team on the road. I thought they were quicker to balls and seemed to fly around on both ends of the floor. They just played with a higher energy level than we did and when you are on the road you are putting yourself in a big disadvantage by doing that. We hit a little bit of a dry spell in the first half in terms of scoring. I think it was an eight-point game and they then went on an 11-0 run and all of the sudden you are digging yourself out of a hole on the road versus a really good team the rest of the game and we just were not able to do that." – Head Coach Nick McDevitt
