BULLDOG BITES
Bulldog Breakdown

WHAT A PAIR: UNC Asheville senior duo Ahmad Thomas and Kevin Vannatta are the only pair ever of four-year Big South classmates each with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists during the same four-year span. The duo is the fourth four-year teammates with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, and on the scoring side, they are the 24th pair of 1,000-point scoring four-year teammates. Thomas with 1,460 career points and Vannatta with 1,155 career points right now have a combined total of 2,615, which places them in the top-11 in the category in league history. Thomas and Vannatta are the fifth set of Bulldog teammates with the achievement in Asheville's Big South era.

PLAYING GREAT BASKETBALL: After starting Big South play at 1-2, UNC Asheville has now won six of its last seven games to move to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in league play.

TIED AT THE TOP: Preseason league favorite UNC Asheville men's basketball is currently tied for first in the Big South Conference with Winthrop and Radford at 7-3. To see the full standings, please visit HERE.

BAEHRE'S BLOCK PARTY: For the third time this season, UNC Asheville's Jonathan Baehre finished a Bulldog win with a career-best four blocks in the win over High Point on Jan. 27. Baehre swatted four High Point shots to go along with his six rebounds, three assists and one steal.

ELITE GROUP: With a win over Presbyterian on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, UNC Asheville head coach Nick McDevitt became just the third coach in Big South history to win at least 15 games in his first four seasons in the league. McDevitt joined Radford's Ron Bradley and Winthrop's Gregg Marshall in the elite grouping. Gardner-Webb's Tim Craft became the fourth and joined McDevitt in the elite group later in the 2016-17 regular season. McDevitt with one more Bulldog win this season looks to join Marshall as the only coaches to win at least 15 games in their first five seasons in the league. Craft can also join the list with four more wins.

20 FOR 20: For the second time in UNC Asheville's current three-game winning streak two Bulldogs finished with over 20 points in the same game in the Jan. 27 win over High Point. Ahmad Thomas' 23 and MaCio Teague's 21 points came less than a week after Kevin Vannatta and Thomas both scored 23 points in the win at Liberty. Impressively, this has now happened three times this season for the Bulldogs with Thomas (24) and Teague (22) both having over 20 points in UNC Asheville's home win over USC Upstate earlier this season.

THOMAS THE ENGINE: In UNC Asheville's 10 games in conference play, Ahmad Thomas has now scored over 20 points six times. He has had 20 or more in each of the last four Bulldog games. In league play, Thomas is averaging 19.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt knows it's about family.

That's why he is so excited for the upcoming 2018 Bulldog Basketball & Alumni Weekend.

"UNC Asheville is a special place, and for alumni to be able to bring their families and friends back to our beautiful campus makes for an exciting weekend," McDevitt said. "We are really looking forward to welcoming our alumni and all former Bulldogs back to UNC Asheville."

UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick also knows it's a very important weekend.

"We are so excited to welcome back many women's basketball alums in February to reunite with former teammates and also spend a little time with our current players," Kirkpatrick said. "We have such a unique advantage in building this Bulldog family with former 10-year coach Betsy Blose on staff here, as well as building a base with the young ladies that have graduated under our tenure in the past five years. We are really looking forward to the legends game that will occur on Friday night, as it's been a while since we have done something like that. We are also appreciative of everything the university is doing for all UNC Asheville alumni that weekend to make this a special experience for everyone involved."

The 2018 Bulldog Basketball & Alumni Weekend will be held Feb. 2-3, 2018, on the campus of UNC Asheville.

The weekend will open with Bulldog fans given the chance to see UNC Asheville greats on the hardwood once again with the Alumni Legacy Games at Kimmel Arena inside the Sherrill Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018.

The Alumni Legacy Games featuring both legends from the UNC Asheville men's and women's basketball programs are completely FREE and open to the public.

In addition, The Hop Ice Cream Café owned and operated by UNC Asheville alumni Greg and Ashley Garrison will be selling their delicious ice cream at the games.

If you are an alumni basketball player interested in attending and/or playing, please contact and RSVP to Betsy Blose at bblose@unca.edu.

The first game of the men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 3, will take place inside Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m. with the women's basketball team playing host to Big South Conference rival Winthrop. The women's game will also serve as UNC Asheville's annual Play4Kay Game and it is also National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

After the conclusion of the women's game there will also be a special Alumni Zone in the atrium of the main concourse of the Sherrill Center. To gain access, all alumni must purchase an alumni ticket.

Starting at 4:30 p.m., the UNC Asheville men's basketball team will then battle Presbyterian College. During halftime, UNC Asheville will honor the 10th, 15th and 20th anniversary teams of the men's Big South championship teams of 1998, 2003 and 2008.

In addition, the day will also serve as Youth Sports Saturday for the Bulldogs and UNC Asheville athletics will also be playing host to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from the area. The Bouncing Blackhawks will be performing at halftime of the men's game as well.

UNC Asheville legend Eddie Biedenbach will also be in attendance to honor these teams and welcome back all Bulldogs.

The fun weekend of all things Bulldog will conclude from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Twisted Laurel in downtown Asheville with a "Bulldog Bash."
