UNC Asheville Moves Into Tie For First in Big South With Home Win Over High Point

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the Big South Conference with an 84-77 victory over High Point on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Kimmel Arena.
The Bulldogs (14-9, 7-3 Big South Conference) led from start-to-finish in the win over High Point (10-11, 5-5 Big South Conference) with UNC Asheville leading by 14 at 24-10 less than nine minutes into the game.
UNC Asheville would go on to lead by as many as 19 at 43-24 after a Drew Rackley three-pointer with 1:19 remaining in the opening half of action.
The two teams would enter intermission with the Bulldogs owning a 43-26 advantage. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the first half while limiting High Point to just 36 percent (9-of-25) shooting.
Ahmad Thomas led the Bulldogs in half No. 1 with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Things would be a lot closer in the second half between the two teams with High Point down just six at 77-71 with just over a minute remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs would hold the Panthers off in the final minute to secure its third straight win.
UNC Asheville finished its win over High Point shooting 54.9 percent (28-of-51) as a team. High Point improved its shooting in the second stanza to finish its loss shooting 47.5 percent (28-of-59) as a team.
Four Bulldogs concluded their efforts in double figures with Thomas leading the way with 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting. He also had three steals, three assists and two rebounds.
MaCio Teague finished the win over High Point with 21 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal. He made 11 free throws in the win over the Panthers.
UNC Asheville's Raekwon Miller continued to shine in league play with his 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists against High Point. The final Bulldog in double figures was Kevin Vannatta, who ended his day with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
All five of High Point's starters ended the loss in double figures with Andre Fox the high scorer for the Panthers with 18 points.

The league win over High Point allowed the Bulldogs to extend their home winning streak to 19. The win over High Point was UNC Asheville's 14th consecutive Big South Conference home victory. UNC Asheville is now 78-16 overall and 53-10 against Big South foes within the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena inside the Sherrill Center. The Bulldogs are 10-0 on the 2017-18 season at Kimmel Arena.
Baehre's Block Party
For the third time this season, UNC Asheville's Jonathan Baehre finished a Bulldog win with a career-best four blocks. Baehre swatted four High Point shots to go along with his six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
20 for 20
For the second time in UNC Asheville's current three-game winning streak two Bulldogs finished with over 20 points in the same game. Ahmad Thomas' 23 and MaCio Teague's 21 points came less than a week after Kevin Vannatta and Thomas both scored 23 points in the win at Liberty. Impressively, this has now happened three times this season for the Bulldogs with Thomas (24) and Teague (22) both having over 20 points in UNC Asheville's home win over USC Upstate earlier this season.

In UNC Asheville's 10 games in conference play, Ahmad Thomas has now scored over 20 points six times. He has had 20 or more in each of the last four Bulldog games. In league play, Thomas is averaging 19.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game.
