Teague’s Career Day Leads Bulldogs to League Road Win at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Behind a career-best 36 points from MaCio Teague the UNC Asheville men's basketball team collected a 64-57 road Big South Conference win at Campbell on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018.
The game opened with UNC Asheville going on a 9-2 run to kick things off in the first almost three minutes of the contest. The Bulldogs led 12-4 after a Teague three-pointer with 15:44 remaining in the opening half of action.
Campbell would go on a run of their own over the next few minutes with the game tied at 19-all with just over eight minutes left in the first half. Teague would give the Bulldogs back the lead at 22-19 shortly thereafter with another three-pointer with 6:13 left in the first stanza.
The two teams would go on to enter the halftime break all tied up at 31-31.
UNC Asheville finished the first half shooting 35.5 percent (11-of-31) as a team, while Campbell shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) as a team in the opening half. The Bulldogs knocked down 42.9 percent (6-of-14) of their three-point attempts in the first half.
Teague finished the first half with 14 points, and he continued his strong efforts into the second half by scoring 10 of UNC Asheville's first 12 points in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 43-35 lead with 15:14 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs overall started the second half on an 18-4 run that included a 16-0 run over six and a half minutes that garnered UNC Asheville a 49-35 lead with 11:42 remaining. The stifling Bulldog defense at the same time held Campbell without a bucket for over seven minutes.
UNC Asheville opened the second half hitting upon nine of its first 12 shots (75 percent).
UNC Asheville would go on to outscore Campbell, 33-26, in the second half in their eventual seven-point win.
The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 45.3 percent (24-of-53), while Campbell shot 40 percent (22-of-55) in its loss to UNC Asheville.
Teague was the only Bulldog in double figures with his 36 points. Chris Clemons led three Camels in double figures in their loss to the Bulldogs with 23 points.

In finishing with 36 points, Teague became the first Bulldog in almost three years to score over 35 points in a single game. The last Bulldog to score over 35 was Andrew Rowsey in a game against High Point on Feb. 26, 2015. Teague's 36 points bested his previous career-best of 30 set in a road win at Longwood on Feb. 11, 2017. Teague's 14 made field goals and seven made three-pointers were new career-bests as well for the sensational sophomore.

After starting Big South play at 1-2, UNC Asheville has now won four straight and seven of its last eight games to move to 15-9 overall and 8-3 in league play.

Dominating a Half of Play
MaCio Teague's 22 points in the second half against Campbell marked the third time this season and fourth time in his career that he has posted 20 or more points in a single half. Earlier this year, Teague had 23 points in the first half in the home win over Charleston Southern on Jan. 15 and he had 20 in the first half in the 82-79 overtime win over Austin Peay on Nov. 19, 2017. Teague also had 24 points in the first half in UNC Asheville's 91-69 Big South Conference road win over Longwood on Feb. 11, 2017.

UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt with the Bulldog win over Campbell joined former Winthrop head coach and current Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall as the only coaches to win at least 15 games in their first five seasons in the Big South Conference. Gardner-Webb head coach Tim Craft can also join the duo with four more wins.

UNC Asheville now has a 25-20 all-time series advantage over Campbell. The Bulldogs have won 12 of the last 13 in the series.

The weekend will open with Bulldog fans given the chance to see UNC Asheville greats on the hardwood once again with the Alumni Legacy Games at Kimmel Arena inside the Sherrill Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018.
The Alumni Legacy Games featuring both legends from the UNC Asheville men's and women's basketball programs are completely FREE and open to the public.
In addition, The Hop Ice Cream Café owned and operated by UNC Asheville alumni Greg and Ashley Garrison will be selling their delicious ice cream at the games.

The first game of the men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 3, will take place inside Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m. with the women's basketball team playing host to Big South Conference rival Winthrop. The women's game will also serve as UNC Asheville's annual Play4Kay Game and it is also National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
After the conclusion of the women's game there will also be a special Alumni Zone in the atrium of the main concourse of the Sherrill Center. To gain access, all alumni must purchase an alumni ticket.
Starting at 4:30 p.m., the UNC Asheville men's basketball team will then battle Presbyterian College. During halftime, UNC Asheville will honor the 10th, 15th and 20th anniversary teams of the men's Big South championship teams of 1998, 2003 and 2008.
In addition, the day will also serve as Youth Sports Saturday for the Bulldogs and UNC Asheville athletics will also be playing host to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from the area. The Bouncing Blackhawks will be performing at halftime of the men's game as well.
UNC Asheville legend Eddie Biedenbach will also be in attendance to honor these teams and welcome back all Bulldogs.
The fun weekend of all things Bulldog will conclude from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Twisted Laurel in downtown Asheville with a "Bulldog Bash."
