CHARLOTTE, N.C. – ESPNU has selected the UNC Asheville at Winthrop men's basketball contest scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18 as its Big South Wildcard Selection broadcast, it was announced today by the Big South Conference office.  Game time will be 9:00pm inside the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.  Matt Schick (play-by-play) and Paul Biancardi (analyst) will handle the call from courtside.

"We are excited once again to be able to showcase our program on national television," UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt said. "UNC Asheville-Winthrop is one of the best rivalries in mid-major, and really, all of college basketball. It should be a fun atmosphere."

The game will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams and the third straight head-to-head match-up on ESPNU.  Last year's Big South co-regular-season champions, both squads opened Big South play this past Saturday with victories.  Winthrop enters this week 7-5 overall, while Asheville is 8-6.  During the non-conference season, the Eagles won by 19 at Furman, while UNC Asheville knocked off Monmouth, Wofford and UNCG.

Four preseason All-Conference players will take the court on Jan. 18 -- Winthrop's Xavier Cooks and Asheville trio Ahmad ThomasMaCio Teague and Kevin Vannatta.  Cooks and Thomas are one of four Big South players ranked among the league's Top 10 in both scoring and rebounding.  Teague is ninth in the conference in scoring while tied for first in steals, while Vannatta is eighth in assists.  In addition, Cooks is approaching a Big South first -- 1,500 career points, 800 career rebounds, 175 career blocks, 200 career assists and 100 career steals.  Thomas is on the cusp of becoming just the second Big South player in league history with 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals.

Last season's meetings on ESPNU were memorable, as Winthrop won the first meeting in Rock Hill by three points (76-73) behind Cooks' 19 points and 13 rebounds.  The Feb. 9 game in Asheville was a classic 104-101 double-overtime triumph by the Bulldogs with Thomas (26 points, 10 rebounds) and Teague (24 points) leading the way.

The UNC Asheville at Winthrop game is the first of four Big South ESPNU Wildcard broadcasts this season, the fifth consecutive year four regular-season Big South games will be carried by the 24-hour college sports network.  ESPNU also has Wildcard broadcasts scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:00pmThursday, Feb. 15 at 9:00pm and Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7:00pm, and those selections will be determined 21 days in advance.
