UNC Asheville Narrowly Falls 2-1 Versus Elon

09.14.2017 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite Caroline Houser scoring her first goal of the season, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team was narrowly defeated by Elon 2-1 at Greenwood Field on Thursday night.

BULLDOG BITES

How It Happened
The Bulldogs and Phoenix were going back-and-forth for the first 22 minutes as there was only one shot on goal by both teams. However in the 23rd minute, the Phoenix netted the first goal of the match as Carson Jones set up the goal with a long pass to Tori Baliatico. After corralling the pass behind the Asheville backline, Baliatico flicked the ball over the Bulldog goalkeeper to find the right-hand corner of the net.

With a 1-0 lead, Baliatico found the net again eight minutes later. Grace Bennett crossed the ball in the Asheville box, and Baliatico drilled the bottom left corner for her second goal of the match.

The Bulldogs took one more shot before the half as Emma Houser put a shot on frame, but the Elon goalkeeper knocked the ball down to keep the score at 2-0.

Heading into the half, Elon held a narrow 6-2 advantage in total shots.

Despite being down a pair of goals, the Bulldogs amped the pressure early in the second half, and the tactic paid off as Caroline Houser scored her first goal of the season two minutes into the half. After generating a turnover in the midfield, Caroline Houser dribbled the ball toward the left corner of the Elon half, and she eventually directed the ball toward the left side of the Elon net. Despite the Elon goalkeeper getting a fingertip on the shot, the ball hit the crossbar and fell into the back of the net to cut the deficit in half for the Bulldogs.

Twenty-two minutes later, senior Courtney Naber put a well-struck shot on goal, but the Elon goalkeeper made a terrific diving save to keep her team one goal ahead.

The Bulldogs didn't give in as they took three shots with a pair being blocked by the Elon defense in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

For the first time this season, the Bulldogs couldn't mount a comeback at home despite sending the previous three home matches into overtime.

With their first regulation-time loss at home, UNC Asheville falls to 3-3-1, while Elon advances to 6-2-1.

What's Next

UNC Asheville concludes its home stand on Saturday as the Bulldogs host USC Upstate at Greenwood Field on Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
