UNC Asheville Hosts Elon and USC Upstate at Greenwood Field

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – With great promotions on hand this week including "Twinsanity" and Hometown Heroes Night, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team plays host to Elon on Thursday and USC Upstate on Saturday at Greenwood Field in non-conference action.

Promotion Lineup
Thursday is "Twinsanity Thursday" where twins and fans who come dressed in similar outfits will be given buy one get one free admission versus Elon. The best-dressed duo will win exclusive soccer gear. Also for Thursday's match, it will be faculty/staff appreciation night where UNC Asheville faculty and staff will be given free admission as well as their families.
On Saturday, it will be Hometown Heroes Night where all the hometown heroes will be given free admission versus the Spartans. Also, it will be Boys and Girls Club Appreciation night, and any member will receive free admission to Saturday's match.
About UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs enter the two matches sporting a 3-2-1 overall record including a 1-1-1 mark at Greenwood Field. UNC Asheville dropped its first road contest of the year as the Bulldogs traveled to Kennesaw State on Sunday and fell 3-0 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Despite dropping their first road contest of the year, the Bulldogs have the fourth-best overall record in the Big South Conference.
In the national standings, UNC Asheville is second in the country in fewest fouls per game (4.33), and senior midfielder Courtney Naber is ranked 22nd in the nation in game-winning goals (2).
With her three points this year, senior forward Caroline Houser is in a three-way tie for sixth place in UNC Asheville program history with 56 career points. She is tied with Lynae King and Paige Trent.
Naber still leads Asheville in scoring with four goals in 2017, but four other Bulldogs have found the back of the net this year. Houser has a team-leading three assists, but her identical twin Emma Houser is right behind her with a pair of assists.
Scouting Elon
Elon comes to Asheville with a 5-2-1 record and winners of two straight games. In their two-match winning streak, the Phoenix have out-scored opponents 7-2.
The Phoenix and Bulldogs have played common opponents this year as Elon has played against North Florida, Jacksonville and Western Carolina. Elon defeated North Florida 4-2 to kick off the year, and the Phoenix upended Jacksonville 2-1 on the road. To conclude the month of August, Elon tied Western Carolina 1-1 at home.
Meredith Christopher and Susannah Anderson lead the team with four goals each, and Christopher has the most assists on the squad with five. Anderson has tallied a pair of assists, which is tied for the second-most on the team with Reena Wichmann.
Elon has put three goalkeepers into net this year, but Hanna Macaulay has had the most success with four starts between the posts. She sports a 0.67 goals against average as she has allowed three goals in 405:20 minutes of play. She also owns three of the five team victories.
Previewing USC Upstate
Prior to Saturday's match in Asheville, USC Upstate will travel to Clinton, S.C. to square off with Presbyterian on Wednesday night.
Heading into the midweek clash, USC Upstate totes a 2-4 record overall including a 0-2 mark in road contests. The Spartans have not been shutout this year and have picked up wins over Alabama A&M and Hampton at home.
In their most recent matchups, the Spartans fell to Wofford (3-2) at home and Winthrop (2-1) on the road.
Eight different Spartans have netted goals this year with Abbie Ellis and Emma Honis leading the team with two goals each. Jada Kinlaw leads the team with three assists as she is tied for third on the squad in points (3).
Brooke Bailey has started all six matches in goal, and she has allowed 16 goals this year (2.67 goals against average) while totaling 19 saves on the year.
As a team, USC Upstate has been out-scored 16-11, but the Spartans have out-shot opponents 96-77 including 41-35 on goal.
