Bulldogs Begin Season at VMI on Friday; Home Opener Set For Sunday versus Wofford

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To begin the 2017 campaign, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team will travel to VMI on Aug. 18 to open the season, and the Bulldogs will return to Greenwood Field on Aug. 20 to host their home opener against Wofford.

The Bulldogs open their 2017 season on the road as Asheville travels to Lexington, Va. on Friday against VMI. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Patchin Field. Asheville is 8-4 against the Keydets with the Bulldogs' most recent victory coming in 2013 (1-0) in Lexington.

UNC Asheville will open its home schedule on Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. versus Wofford at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs are 7-6-1 against the Terriers all-time with Asheville's most recent win against Wofford coming in 2012 (4-0) at home.

Asheville is 9-14-1 in regular-season openers with its most recent victory in 2015 when the Bulldogs downed The Citadel 4-0 at home. The Bulldogs began that season 7-3 where they out-scored opponents 22-10 including four games with three or more goals scored.

Three Bulldogs received Big South Conference accolades in 2016 – Emma Houser, Caroline Houser and Paige Trent. Trent and Emma Houser were named Second Team All-Conference while Caroline Houser was tabbed Honorable Mention. Emma and Caroline Houser both return to Asheville for their senior seasons looking to cap off their Bulldog careers.

Caroline Houser is currently second all-time in UNC Asheville's history in career assists (20). She is two assists away from tying Hilary McKay for the most assists in the program's existence. Caroline Houser is also 11th all-time in goals scored (16) and points (42). She is three goals away from tying Alison Gehringer and 11 points away from matching Ashley Hart in the all-time record book.

Head coach Michelle Demko is five victories away from reaching a milestone – 50 career wins at UNC Asheville.

Scouting VMI and Wofford

Last year VMI finished seventh in the Southern Conference while Wofford placed 10th. This year, SoCon coaches predicted the Keydets to fall to eighth while the Terriers to finish last.

VMI went 8-12 overall and 4-5 in the SoCon last year. The Keydets played well at home as they posted a 6-5 record at Patchin Field.

Wofford went 2-16-1 overall and 0-8-1 in league play, and The Terriers went 0-9-1 in road matches last season.

Tied for the team-lead in goals scored last year for VMI, Blake Cashin and Amy Horney both return for their junior and senior seasons, respectively. The duo each netted three goals with Horney tallying an assist to mark the second-most points on the squad (7). Returning for her senior season, Emma Quirk marked the most points on the team last year with nine (2 goals and 5 assists).

Wofford forward Katie Beuerlein returns for her final season in Spartanburg, S.C. The Knoxville, Tenn. native netted three goals to lead the Terriers in goals scored and points (6). Of the 19 games played last year, the Terriers were shut out in 12 games including seven of the last eight games to conclude the season. Junior goalkeeper Mayson Liner played in 10 games last year where she totaled 1,035 minutes and a team-best 1.83 goals against average.
