Chillson Scores Late Goal To Give Bulldogs 1-0 Victory at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – In a second half that was dominated by the Bulldogs, UNC Asheville women's soccer freshman Skyler Chillson netted the game-winner in the 82nd minute that sealed the 1-0 season-opening victory for Asheville over VMI at Patchin Field on Friday night.

How It Happened
The first half was evenly balanced for both clubs, but the Bulldogs maintained most of the possession. Asheville held a 9-6 advantage in shots in the first half including three on frame.
In the 13th minute, the Bulldogs thought they had their first goal of the 2017 season as Chillson found the right side of the net, but the referee called her offside, which wiped off the goal. Just a few minutes later, senior Caroline Houser had another opportunity to score for the Bulldogs, but her shot went wide.
UNC Asheville dominated the second half as the team took 14 shots with eight on goal. Asheville's Courtney Naber nearly capitalized in a one-on-one situation with the VMI goalkeeper, but the senior's shot hit the crossbar. The deflection found Chillson who took a second attempt on goal, but the shot sailed wide.
At the 69th minute, Asheville had ample chances to net the first goal of the match. Freshman Emily Dueñas took two shots on goal, but the VMI goalkeeper saved both attempts to keep the score level at 0-0.
With only eight minutes remaining in the match, Dueñas took a shot on frame, but the attempt was deflected by a VMI defender. The ricochet found Houser who fed a low cross into the VMI box. The ball met Chillson who tapped in the game-winner which was the first collegiate goal of her career.
VMI nearly leveled the match with seconds remaining, but freshman goalkeeper Bryson Lee made a save to her right to seal the victory.
Lee made six saves in her collegiate debut, and Dueñas took four shots with three on frame in 46 minutes of playing time. Emma Houser contributed a pair of shots with both on frame as well.
The Bulldogs sealed their ninth victory in the 13th all-time meeting against the Keydets.
With an assist on Chillson's goal, Caroline Houser is one assist away from tying Hilary McKay (22 assists) for the most career assists in program history.

Asheville returns home on Aug. 20 to square off against Wofford at Greenwood Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Asheville.
UNC Asheville is 7-6-1 all-time against the Terriers with the Bulldogs' most recent win against Wofford coming in 2012 (4-0) at home.
