Gardner-Webb Takes Game-Two 11-0 to Even Series

05.19.2017 | Baseball

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team suffered an 11-0 setback Friday night at the hands of Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action at John H. Moss Stadium.

The win by Gardner-Webb (23-28, 10-13 Big South) snapped a nine-game losing skid.

The game, which lasted nearly four and a half hours, was delayed for nearly two hours between the top and bottom of the first inning as a storm moved through the area.

Tyler Serricchio was the lone bright spot on the night for UNC Asheville (23-29, 11-12 Big South), recording his fifth multi-hit game of the season and fourth in the last six games. The freshman went 2-for-4 with a double while Carmine Pagano, Chris Troost and Kyle Carruthers notched the Bulldogs' other two hits.

In the bottom of the second, Chandler Redmond put Gardner-Webb up first with a solo home run to lead off the frame. Gardner-Webb was then able to get two more runners into scoring position, but a fly ball to right field was corralled in by Carruthers and he promptly threw home. The Runnin' Bulldog on third attempted to tag up and race home, but Carruthers' throw was right on the money and Serricchio didn't have to move to tag the runner out at home for the double play.

In the bottom of the third inning, Gardner-Webb added to the lead with a single run to go up 2-0 and extended the lead out to 8-0 with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Runnin' Bulldogs added another two runs off back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the fifth and finished things off with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Justin Woods (L, 3-4) started the game on the mound for UNC Asheville, going the first two innings to be the pitcher of record. Brandon Harris then pitched just over one inning, striking out three batters with Jesse Juday and Nick Boyles closing out the evening. Boyles finished the night with five strikeouts, including striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.

Landon Mitchell (W, 5-4) pitched the first five innings for Gardner-Webb, striking out eight batters while giving up two hits and no runs. The Runnin' Bulldogs' four pitchers struck out a combined 16 batters.

BULLDOG BITES
PICKING RUNNERS OFF: In the bottom of the first inning, Justin Woods caught a GWU runner sleeping at second, picking him off. It was the senior's third pickoff of the year and UNC Asheville's 14th as a team. The three pickoffs by Woods ties freshman catcher Joe Gruszka for tops on the team.

ON THE MONEY: In the bottom of the second inning, senior right fielder Kyle Carruthers corralled in a fly ball and promptly threw home. His throw was right on the money and allowed freshman catcher Tyler Serricchio to easily tag a Gardner-Webb runner out. It was the third outfield assist of the season for Carruthers and the 16th by Asheville this season. UNC Asheville is second in the nation only to Charleston Southern's 19.

TURNING DOUBLE PLAYS: Kyle Carruthers' double play fly ball in the bottom of the second was the 45th double play turned by the Bulldogs this season.

SERRICCHIO'S MULTI-HIT OUTINGS: Friday night marked the fifth time this season that freshman catcher Tyler Serricchio notched multiple hits in a game. It is also the fourth time since Friday, May 12, against Longwood that the freshman has recorded multiple hits in a game, a stretch of six games. In that span, Serricchio has batted .450 (9-for-20) with five runs scored and four doubles.

BOYLES DEALING: Nick Boyles came on to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning and promptly struck out the side. In the bottom of the eighth, the junior right-hander struck out another two batters, giving him a season-high five strikeouts, eclipsing his previous high of three set on April 14 at High Point.

UP NEXT
UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb will close out the regular season on Saturday, May 20, with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

QUOTABLES
"We didn't do a lot well tonight. We got beat by a better team, so we tip our cap to Gardner-Webb and will move on to tomorrow." – Scott Friedholm
