Baseball Claims Game-One 10-5 Over Campbell
04.21.2017 | Baseball
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team put together a complete team effort Friday night to defeat Campbell 10-5 in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series.
The Bulldog offense (16-22, 6-7 Big South) was clicking on all cylinders from the get-go and the pitching corps picked each other up throughout the game to finish off the come-from-behind win.
After Campbell (17-21, 5-8 Big South) went ahead with a single run in the bottom of the second, UNC Asheville responded with a five-spot in the top of the third. The five runs scored came off four hits and included three two-out runs.
Tanner Bush led off the frame with a beautiful bunt on the first pitch he saw and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carmine Pagano and Danny Wilson then loaded the bases by drawing walks before Joe Tietjen ripped a single to left field, scoring Bush and Pagano to give the Bulldogs the lead.
Two at-bats later, Brandon Lankford singled through the right side, scoring Wilson from third.
After Joe Gruszka walked to put two runners on with two outs, Campbell made a pitching change. The move did little to stall the momentum as Justin Woods laced a double to left-center field, scoring Lankford and Gruszka to give Asheville a 5-1 lead.
Campbell responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning and then pulled to within one run with two in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Camels tied the game at 5-all and proceeded to load the bases with just one out, but Brandon Harris came on and got the last two batters to foul out and fly out to get out of the jam.
In the top of the seventh, UNC Asheville was able to retake the lead as Kyle Carruthers laced his second career triple to right-center field. Two at-bats earlier, Wilson had singled down the left field line, setting up Carruthers for the RBI. Carruthers then gave the Bulldogs a two-run, 7-5 lead when Gruszka knocked a single to center field before Campbell was able to slow the scoring drive.
In the top of the ninth, UNC Asheville added two insurance runs to extend the lead out to 9-5. The Camels, looking to turn a double play with one out, intentionally walked Lankford to load the bases, but Gruszka made Campbell pay with a two-RBI double down the left field line to give the Bulldogs a 9-4 lead with one out. It was the third double of the season for the freshman catcher.
A few at-bats later, Bush drew a four-pitch, two-out walk with bases loaded to score Lankford and set the score at 10-5 in favor of the Bulldogs, a lead Asheville held on to for the final half inning.
Wilson, Gruszka and Woods all had multi-hit outings in the game with Wilson leading the charge with a 2-for-3 effort that included scoring three runs. Gruszka went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in while Woods went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Freshman left-hander Greg Gasparro started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs and pitched 5.0 innings before giving way to Nick Boyles, Brandon Harris, Austin Fahr and Woods. Harris (4-3) earned his fourth win of the season, pitching two-thirds of an inning and Woods picked up his fifth save of the campaign.
Andrew Witczak started the game for Campbell but gave way to Harry Thomas after 2.2 innings. Thomas (2-2) went 3.2 innings and gave up two runs to be the pitcher of record. The five Campbell pitchers combined for 11 walks on the night with six coming around to score.

QUOTABLES
"This was a good team win tonight. We were disciplined at the plate and took 11 walks, of which six of them scored. Our bullpen picked each other up tonight in a big way. We had seven inherited runners and none of them scored. Now we have to forget about it and prepare for tomorrow." – Scott Friedholm
