Campbell Claims 9-7 Walk-Off Win Over Bulldogs
04.22.2017 | Baseball
UNC Asheville (16-23, 6-8 Big South) struck first in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs after both starting pitchers and defense found ways to shut down the opposition. Kyle Carruthers got things started when he singled to center field and then moved to third off a double by Brandon Lankford, setting up another prime opportunity for freshman catcher Joe Gruszka, who batted in three runs on Friday. After Carruthers scored off a wild pitch, Gruszka grounded out to the second baseman, but batted in Lankford in the process to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
Campbell (18-21, 6-8 Big South) responded in the bottom of the frame by taking the lead off four runs, including three on a home run, but the Bulldogs' bats remained hot in the top of the fifth inning.
Chris Troost and Tanner Bush led off the fifth with back-to-back doubles, pulling the Bulldogs to within one run of the Camels as Troost, who advanced to third on a wild pitch, scored off Bush's double. The extra-base knock was the second of the game for the junior left fielder.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the next at-bat when Carmine Pagano singled through the left side, scoring Bush who had advanced to third on a passed ball. Pagano then gave Asheville the lead back a few at-bats later when he scored off a sacrifice fly in deep foul territory by Lankford.
After Lankford's sac fly, Gruszka drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases and Justin Woods followed suit by drawing his own walk to push Danny Wilson across the dish, giving UNC Asheville a 6-4 lead.
The next three and a half innings passed scoreless before Wilson scored off a sacrifice fly from Carruthers, extending the Bulldogs' lead out to 7-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, Campbell worked through four Bulldog pitchers and ended the game with a walk-off grand slam to claim the 9-7 win.
Wilson and Bush both logged two hits in the game with Wilson scoring twice while Bush scored once and drove in another run. Five other Bulldogs registered a hit in the game.
On the mound, senior Spencer Orr pitched the first 3.1 innings, striking out three, before giving way to Blake Brown, Eric Whitecavage, Austin Fahr, Justin Woods and Kole Harris. Woods (3-2) was saddled with the loss.
For Campbell, Alex Yarem started the game and pitched four complete innings before Wes Noble (2-2) took over to earn his second win on the year. Noble fanned five batters in relief.

QUOTABLES
"This was a tough one, but I'm proud of the way our guys have played the last two days. We didn't get the outcome we wanted, but we put ourselves in a good spot at the end of the game. We just didn't execute well enough late and Campbell took advantage. I am excited to see how we respond tomorrow." – Scott Friedholm
