Bulldog Baseball Splits Twinbill at Richmond, Wins Game-Two 4-1

RICHMOND, Va. – After dropping the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at the University of Richmond 4-2, the UNC Asheville baseball team bounced back to claim a 4-1 victory in game-two at Pitt Field behind a strong pitching performance from freshman Greg Gasparro.
Game-1: Richmond 4, AVL 2
In the day's first game, Justin Woods gave UNC Asheville (12-14) a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when he hit his fourth home run of the season, a 3-2 bomb with two outs on the board.
Richmond (10-15) was able to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning and extended that out to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bulldogs had three well-hit balls come close to home runs during the game, but the Richmond outfielders were able to reel all three in right at the wall.
In the top of the ninth, Danny Wilson led off by drawing a walk and moved to second when Kyle Carruthers sent a single through the left side. Wilson then made it safely to third and then scored off a throwing error by the Richmond second baseman who was trying to throw Brandon Lankford out at first, but that was all the offense the Bulldogs could manage in the end as Richmond held on for the 4-2 win.
Freshman Brandon Harris (3-2) pitched the first 4.2 innings for Asheville before giving way to Nick Boyles, who closed out the final 3.1 innings without giving up a run and only two hits. Robbie Baker (2-2) pitched 7.0 innings for Richmond to earn just his second win of the year while Jonahtan De Marte pitched the final frame, earning his second save of the year.
Game-2: AVL 4, UR 1
The day's second game started off with neither starting pitcher giving up much, but it was Richmond starter Layne Looney who flinched first.
In the top of the fourth, Wilson swung on the second pitch he saw and singled through the left side to lead things off and break up the no-hitter. He then stole second and advanced to third off a deep fly ball to right field by Carruthers. Andrew Friedholm finished it off by driving Wilson home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs added another run when Chris Troost, who walked earlier in the frame and stole second, scored off a Carruthers single. The Bulldogs were able to get Carruthers and Friedholm into scoring position and loaded the bases, but Richmond found a way to get out of the jam without any further damage.
UNC Asheville closed out the scoring drive in the top of the eighth with a two-spot that included no hits. Wilson and Friedholm both walked and Justin Woods wore a pitch to load the bases. After a couple pitching changes for the Spiders, Derek Smith drew a four-pitch, two-out walk to push Wilson across the plate and Kyle Harris wore a pitch, scoring Friedholm and setting the score at 4-0 before the Spiders could get the third out.
Richmond was able to avoid the shutout with a run in the bottom of the ninth and threatened to add more, but Woods struck out the last batter of the game to end the threat and secure the victory.
Gasparro (2-1) pitched a gem of a game through the first seven innings, giving up just one hit and no runs while striking out five batters to earn his second win of the year. Looney (2-3) was the pitcher of record for Richmond as the Spiders sent six pitchers to the bump in the game.
BULLDOG BITES
WOODS SWINGING THE LUMBER: Justin Woods ripped his fourth home run of the season in the top of the second inning of the day's first game to put UNC Asheville ahead. It was the ninth of his career and surpasses his previous season-high of three set as a redshirt sophomore in 2015.
SWIPING BASES: Joe Tietjen moved up a spot in program history as he stole a base Saturday in the first game, giving him 13 for the season and 36 for his career. He is now in a tie for sixth in program history for career stolen bases and is just two away from fifth.

Gasparro pitched seven scoreless innings Saturday against Richmond and seven scoreless innings last Saturday in the series finale with Presbyterian. The weekend before, in the Bulldogs' Big South Conference opening series against Winthrop, Gasparro pitched one scoreless inning against the Eagles in the Sunday series finale.
UP NEXT
UNC Asheville and Richmond will close out the series with the rubber game of the series at high noon tomorrow, Sunday, April 2.
QUOTABLES
"It was a bizarre day. We saw a lot of unusual things occur in both games, but we continued to pitch and play defense. In game-one, we had some opportunities that we weren't able to capitalize on offensively and that proved to be the difference. In game-two, we did a great job of taking some free bases via walk or hit by pitch and our pitching and defense did enough to earn us the win." - Scott Friedholm
