BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Thursday afternoon.

Asheville jumped to an early lead by taking the doubles point.  The No. 1 seeded Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley improved to 9-5 on the season with a win over Sandra Bolstad and Daniela Nauparia, 6-1. The No. 3 pairing of Christin Louw and Emily Sidor clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over Mary Walker Mixon and Miljana Ristic. The No. 2 match was left unfinished as Asheville had already clinched the doubles point.

No. 1 Francisco lost a heartbreaking 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 match to Bolstad. No. 1 Lauren Watson-Steele also fell in a three setter to Sarah Rieckmann 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Court No. 3 saw Shipley win yet another match that went the distance, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, triumph over Naupari. No. 4 Sidor fell to Ristic, 6-1, 6-4. No. 5 Hunter Hall battled back but fell short to Catherine White, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. No. 6 Amalie Davidsen concluded the afternoon with a straight set victory over Paula Romero, 6-3, 6-1.

BULLDOG BITES
WEEKLY AWARDS: Kylee Shipley was named Big South Women's Tennis Player of the week and Emily Sidor was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for her second time this season for their performances in the matches played Feb. 27-March 6.

FRESHMAN SHINING: Despite her loss today, freshman Emily Sidor has had a stellar start to the season. Sidor is now 7-2 in singles play, while her five match win streak was snapped.

GOING THE DISTANCE: Sophomore Kylee Shipley has shown her resiliency this year as eight of her 14 matches have gone a full three sets. Shipley is not only 11-3 on the season in singles play, but 7-1 in matches that have gone the full three sets.

UP NEXT 
The Bulldogs will return to the Asheville Racquet Club for what will be their last home match of the season, against Charleston Southern, on Saturday, March 18, beginning at 1 p.m.
