Bulldogs Win Fifth Straight in 5-2 Victory Over Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis team extended to a five-match winning streak with their 5-2 victory over Longwood at the Lancer Courts Sunday afternoon.

Asheville gained the early lead by taking the doubles competition. The No. 1 seeded pairing of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley downed Fallon Burger and Marija Venta, 6-3. No. 2 seeded Lauren Watson-Steele and Hunter Hall then clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs with a 6-1 win over Jamie Breunig and Paloma Alatorre. Longwood took court No. 3 when Christin Louw and Emily Sidor fell 6-4 to Mason Thomas and Anna Pelak.

The Bulldogs No. 1 Francisco battled back after dropping the first set to a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, triumph over Breunig. No. 2 seeded Watson-Steele was defeated by Venta, 6-1, 6-3. On court No. 3, Shipley showed her metal strength, once again battling back from a set down to best Alatorre, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 4 court saw Louw lose to Thomas, 6-0, 6-2. The freshman Sidor saw her first action at the No. 5 singles slot, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Burger. No. 6 Davidsen won her match in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-1, over Pelak.

CONTINUING STRONG PLAY: Emily Sidor was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week earlier this season for her performances in matches played Feb. 13-19. The freshman continued her strong start to her collegiate career with an exciting three-set victory at the No. 6 singles position Saturday. Sidor is now 7-1 on the season in singles play.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Sophomore Kylee Shipley has shown her resiliency this year as seven of her 13 matches have gone a full three sets. Shipley is not only 10-3 on the season in singles play, but 6-1 in matches that have gone the full three sets.

The Bulldogs will travel to Boiling Spring, N.C. on Tuesday, March 7, to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. The start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
