ROCK HILL, S.C. – They call it March Madness for a reason and unfortunately regular-season co-champion and Big South Tournament second-seeded UNC Asheville was on the opposite end of the madness in an 81-79 loss to seventh-seeded Campbell in quarterfinal action at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Bulldogs would open the contest with junior guard Raekwon Miller knocking down a three-pointer to take a very early 3-0 advantage. The Bulldogs would lead 16-9 after back-to-back-to-back buckets by junior forward Alec Wnuk with 13:42 left in the opening half of action.

The three straight Wnuk buckets were part of a run for Asheville where the Bulldogs held the Camels without a field goal for over seven minutes and outscored Campbell, 16-0, during the same stretch to own a 23-9 advantage with 9:15 to play in half No. 1.

Campbell would follow up the Bulldog run with a 16-2 run of their own over the next five-plus minutes to tie things up at 25-all with 4:42 left in the first half.

The Camels would enter halftime with a 36-35 lead over the Bulldogs. Chris Clemons was the catalyst for Campbell in the first half, scoring 23 of the Camels' first 25 points in the contest and 25 points overall in the opening half. Miller led the Bulldogs in the first stanza with nine points.

The second half would commence with freshman guard MaCio Teague knocking down a three-pointer from the corner that garnered the Bulldogs a 38-36 advantage.

The two teams would be tied at 50-all with 13:46 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs would go on an 8-4 run shortly thereafter to own a 58-54 lead after a Wnuk layup with 11:51 left in the game.

Asheville and Campbell would continue to keep things close over the next few minutes with the Bulldogs owning a 65-59 lead with under eight minutes remaining. The two teams were all tied up once again at 67-all with just under six left in the final half of play.

Campbell would own a 77-74 lead over the Bulldogs after a David Robertson three-pointer with 1:35 to play in the contest.

With five seconds remaining it would be Campbell that was up by five at 81-76, but a Raekwon Miller three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining cut the Bulldog deficit to just two at 81-79. The Bulldogs would foul Campbell next to send the Camels to the free throw line, but a miss with little time remaining would only give Wnuk a chance for a long-range effort that fell short to give the Camels the upset win.

The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field, while Campbell shot 55.8 percent (29-of-52) from the floor as a team. The Bulldogs shot 81 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line.

Clemons was the star on the day as he finished with a Big South Tournament record 51 points.

Asheville had five players in double figures with Teague leading the way with 22 points, seven rebounds, one block and one steal. Wnuk just missed on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Three Bulldogs ended their day with 12 points with Miller, Robertson and junior guard Ahmad Thomas each scoring 12 points. Miller also had four assists, while Thomas, the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year, had two steals.

BULLDOG BITES
CLOSE GAME: The lead changed hands 11 times and the score was tied 11 times in the contest.

BEEN A WHILE: Campbell picked up its first win over the Bulldogs since rejoining the Big South Conference in the 2011-12 season with the quarterfinal win. The Bulldogs entered the contest having won 10 straight over the Camels.

OVER 900: With his 12 points in the contest, UNC Asheville senior guard David Robertson surpassed 900 points in his career as he now has 911 career points.

QUOTABLES
"First of all, congratulations to Campbell on winning this game and advancing to the next round. I just thought that we did not have enough of a sense of urgency on the defensive end of the floor to win the game. Any time you score 79 and only have eight turnovers, you took care of the ball and your offensive end of the floor was good. I just thought defensively we were lacking. That and Chris Clemons had a heck of a performance. He's capable of doing that and when guys get going – really offensive weapons like that – when they really get going, you've got to find a way to make them miss and I thought we were hoping he would miss." – Head Coach Nick McDevitt
