Bulldogs Claim Series-Opener 11-5 Over UMBC, Will Play Noon Doubleheader Saturday
03.10.2017 | Baseball
The two will close out the series tomorrow, Saturday, March 11, with a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, both of the remaining games will be played on Saturday at Greenwood Field. Game-two of the twinbill will start approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
UMBC (1-8) struck first in the top of the first inning of Friday's game, taking advantage of high winds that caused less than ideal conditions for both sides throughout the game. The Retrievers pushed four unearned runs across the plate in the frame before the Bulldogs could get out of the threat.
The Bulldogs (6-6) came roaring back in the bottom of the second inning, though, scoring eight runs, seven of which were earned, to take an 8-4 lead.
Jake Madole and Andrew Friedholm got things going in a hurry for UNC Asheville as they hit matching back-to-back home runs over the left field fence. Both homers were on 2-1 counts. Following the pair of homers, Carmine Pagano laid down a bunt and reached safely on a single, but made it all the way around to third on a throwing error by the UMBC third baseman. Kole Harris then batted Pagano in with a single of his own.
After Chris Troost drew a walk, Joe Tietjen singled to right field and Danny Wilson drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases, Brandon Lankford did what he has done all season: capitalize on runners in scoring position. The freshman third baseman ripped a double to left field, scoring Troost and Tietjen in the process.
The Bulldogs' third extra-base knock of the inning forced a pitching change, but that didn't slow UNC Asheville down much as Justin Woods singled to center field, scoring Wilson before Madole notched his second extra-base hit of the frame with a double to left field that scored Lankford and set the score at 7-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The final run came when Pagano hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Woods to score an unearned run.
The eight runs scored in the inning were the most by the Bulldogs during the Scott Friedholm era and were the most since the 2012 squad pushed nine runs across the plate against North Carolina Central on Feb. 17, 2012. Ironically, the nine runs scored in 2012 were also scored in the second inning.
UMBC was able to score one final run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs added three insurance runs, one in the fifth and two in the seventh.
In the fifth inning, Pagano scored from third on a throwing error by the UMBC third baseman. The seventh inning saw Wilson draw a five-pitch, bases loaded walk to score Kole Harris and Lankford rounded out the scoring by batting in Troost in the next at-bat.
All nine starting position players scored for the Bulldogs with both Troost and Pagano crossing the dish twice. Lankford led four Bulldogs with multiple hits in the game, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Woods, Madole and Pagano all had two hits.
For UMBC, Mitchell Carroll led the way with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Five different Retrievers scored in the game.
On the mound, freshman Brandon Harris (2-0) earned his second win of the year as he pitched 5.0 innings and gave up no earned runs. Fellow freshman Greg Gasparro came on to pitch the final four innings and held the Retrievers scoreless and struck out two, including the final batter of the game.
Michael Austin (0-1) lasted just over an inning, giving up seven hits, seven earned runs and three walks in the losing effort.
BULLDOG BITES
TOMORROW'S STARTERS: UNC Asheville will send redshirt junior right-hander Joe Zayatz to the mound to start game-one of the doubleheader. The Bulldogs will then call on senior southpaw Spencer Orr for the final game of the series. UMBC will utilize Matt Chanin as the starter in the first game of the twinbill and will then send Jacob Christian to the mound for the finale.
BIG SECOND INNING: The eight runs scored in the second inning Friday evening were the most by a Bulldog squad under head coach Scott Friedholm. The eight runs were also the most scored by a UNC Asheville baseball team since the 2012 season when the Bulldogs put up nine runs against on the road at North Carolina Central on Feb. 17, 2012. Ironically, it was the second inning for both squads.
BACK-TO-BACK HOMERS: First baseman Jake Madole and catcher Andrew Friedholm hit back-to-back home runs in the first two at-bats of the second inning to spur the scoring drive. It is the first time this season that UNC Asheville batters have gone yard in back-to-back at-bats. Both homers were the first of the year for Madole and Friedholm.
EXTRA BASES: Jake Madole had a big second inning as he not only homered, but also ripped an RBI double in his second at-bat of the frame.
UP NEXT
UNC Asheville and UMBC will close out the three-game series on Saturday, March 11, with a noon doubleheader. The second game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Both games will be streamed live via the Big South Network.
QUOTABLES
"We did a good job of coming back today after a shaky start. Joe Tietjen and Danny Wilson made game-saving catches to close out the first inning and then Brandon Harris and Greg Gasparro did a nice job pitching for the final eight innings." - Scott Friedholm
