Baseball Takes Series Over UMBC After Splitting Saturday Twinbill

03.11.2017 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team split its doubleheader with the University of Maryland – Baltimore County (UMBC) Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field, claiming the first game in walk-off fashion 7-6 before falling 8-4 in the series finale.

With the win in game-one of Saturday's twinbill, the Bulldogs (7-7) won their second straight weekend series 2-1. Last weekend, Asheville defeated Iona 2-1 at Greenwood Field.

Game 1: AVL 7, UMBC 6
The first game saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. Danny Wilson scored Joe Tietjen from second with a single up the middle in the first inning after Tietjen walked and then stole second. When the senior center fielder swiped second base, he moved into the top-10 in program history for career stolen bases.

In the second inning, Kole Harris took advantage of a no-out, bases loaded situation and doubled down the left field line, scoring Jake Madole and Andrew Friedholm.  Two batters later, Tietjen recorded his first RBI of the day with a single at the shortstop that scored Carmine Pagano and set the score at 4-0.

The Retrievers (2-9) were able to get a run back in the top of the fourth, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to set the score at 6-1 when Wilson ripped a double down the left field line, scoring both Pagano and Tietjen. Wilson ended the day with four RBIs.

UMBC went on to score three runs in the top of the fifth and another two in the sixth to pull even with the Bulldogs, setting up some late-game heroics by Kyle Carruthers. In the bottom of the ninth, Wilson drew a four-pitch walk and then stole second. With two outs on the board, Carruthers sent a base hit up the middle and Wilson raced home, never slowing down as he rounded third for home.

Wilson, Pagano and Harris all recorded two hits in the first game of the day with Wilson notching three RBIs and Harris batting in two runs of his own. Pagano and Tietjen each scored two runs in the game.

Collin Stack and Mitchell Carroll led the way in game-one for UMBC with similar 3-for-4 outings at the plate.

Eric Whitecavage (1-0) came on to pitch the final 3.1 innings for UNC Asheville and earned his first win of the season. Whitecavage gave up just two hits and a walk and struck out two batters while giving up no runs. Joe Zayatz started on the mound for the Bulldogs and struck out six batters while giving up four hits and just one run in 4.0 innings.

Patrick Phillips (0-1) was the pitcher of record in game-one for UMBC as he was responsible for putting Wilson on base to lead off the ninth.

Game 2: UMBC 8, AVL 4
Game-two of the day and three of the series started off with the two teams trading single runs in the first. In the bottom of the frame, Wilson recorded his fourth RBI of the day as he batted in Tietjen from third. Tietjen ripped a triple to left field in the at-bat just before.

UMBC was able to retake the lead for good in the top of the third inning, pushing across two runs to go up 3-1. The Retrievers then added two runs in the fourth and finished the game with three in the ninth.

Asheville was able to get a single run in the bottom of the fifth when Tietjen sent a huge home run over the left field fence.

Justin Woods led off the bottom of the eighth with a monster homer of his own to right-center field. The final Bulldog run came in the form of freshman catcher Joe Gruszka scoring off a sacrifice fly from Pagano.

In the series finale, Tietjen, Brandon Lankford, and Woods all recorded two hits with Tietjen crossing the plate twice.

For UMBC, Jamie Switalski led the way with a 4-for-5 performance to close out the weekend that included four runs batted in and two scored himself.

On the mound, senior Spencer Orr (1-1) suffered his first setback of the season. Orr went 4.0 innings, but struck out four batters. The Bulldogs' pitchers combined to strike out nine batters in the day's second game.

For the Retrievers, Joe Vanderplas (1-2) earned his first win of the season, going 5.1 innings that saw him give up six hits and two earned runs. Cory Callahan earned his first save of the season as he came on in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run lead and the go-ahead run at the plate with just one out on the board.

BULLDOG BITES
TOP-10 AND MOVING UP: With his two stolen bases in game-one of Saturday's doubleheader, senior Joe Tietjen moved into 10th all-time in program history for bases swiped with 29 for his career. He is now just two away from ninth and five away from a tie for seventh.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Between Saturday's two games, senior centerfielder Joe Tietjen batted .375 with three hits, four runs scored a triple and a home run. He boasted a 1.000 slugging percentage for the twinbill, an on-base percentage of .500 and swiped two bases.

PUSHING RUNS ACROSS THE PLATE: Between the two games on Saturday, Danny Wilson pushed four runs across the dish and scored one himself.

UP NEXT
UNC Asheville will play two midweek games next week beginning with a road contest at Charlotte on Tuesday, March 14. First pitch of the game against the 49ers will be at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs will then return home for five straight games at Greenwood Field, including hosting East Tennessee State on Wednesday, March 15, and the Big South Conference opening series against Winthrop next weekend.

QUOTABLES
"Congrats to Coach Mumma and his team for a good win the third game of our series. Vanderplas did a good job of keeping us off balance, but we were fortunate to win the series and that's what our goal is each weekend. Kyle Carruthers came up with a huge hit for us in the ninth inning of the day's first game and that won us the series." - Scott Friedholm
