Bulldog Baseball Suffers 14-5 Setback at Charlotte
03.14.2017 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell 14-5 to Charlotte at Hayes Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
The 49ers (11-6) scored five runs in the first inning to take a 5-3 lead and never looked back. The Niners then scored three runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one final run in the fifth.
The Bulldogs (7-8) started off red-hot as they claimed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman third baseman Brandon Lankford ripped his team-leading fifth home run of the season, scoring Joe Tietjen and Danny Wilson in the process. Earlier in the inning, Tietjen swiped his 30th career base. Before the game was done, he collected his 31st and moved up into a tie for ninth in program history for career stolen bases.
Asheville was able to get two runs back in the top of the eighth as both Tietjen and Lankford crossed the dish again off a ground out RBI and a passed ball, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get.
Lankford continued his solid freshman campaign, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and his three RBIs. Carmine Pagano also collected multiple hits on the day with a 2-for-3 outing. The Bulldogs were out-hit 18-5 by the 49ers.
Zach Jarrett had the best day at the plate for Charlotte, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs.
On the mound, Jesse Juday (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs while Colby Bruce (1-0) earned his first win of the season.

UNC Asheville will now return home for four straight games at Greenwood Field, including opening the Big South Conference slate against Winthrop this coming weekend. The Bulldogs and Eagles will begin the series with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, March 17. QUOTABLES
"It will always come down to pitching and defense and we had neither today. We must control the leadoff hitter of the inning and we didn't. We must turn routine double plays and we didn't do that three times. We must get back to who we were when we had success and that is a gritty, grinding type of team. And we are not that right now, either." - Scott Friedholm
